Overview
About the Volkswagen Tiguan
The Volkswagen Tiguan is a long-running compact SUV that sells in various forms around the world. Though considered small in the U.S., the SUV is in the midsize category in many countries, especially as it is one of the few in its class to offer a third-row seat. It has long boasted an upscale interior, sporty but comfortable handling, and good cargo space. That said, Volkswagen has not done as great a job with its power delivery and technology offerings, as many model years suffer from underpowered engines and confusing infotainment.
What are the advantages of the Volkswagen Tiguan?
The Tiguan is a refined and upscale SUV that offers good interior space and room for cargo. Newer models have a small but usable third-row seat, and all Tiguans bring responsive handling.
What is the best Volkswagen Tiguan model year?
The 2020 Tiguan is a solid choice, as it has a modern body style, desirable tech features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the available third row. It’s also two years after a major redesign, which should give enough time for VW to hammer out any issues.
What are the disadvantages of the Volkswagen Tiguan?
Despite sporty handling, the Tiguan’s engine doesn’t deliver the same level of engagement. It feels underpowered around town, and it fizzles at highway speeds. At the same time, the SUV returns disappointing fuel economy.
Comparison: Is the Volkswagen Tiguan better than the Volkswagen Taos?
The VW Tiguan and Taos are in two different classes, making it hard to compare the two. Buyers needing more space should opt for the Tiguan, but those wanting a smaller, more affordable SUV should grab the Taos. Both are smaller than VW’s flagship three-row SUV, the Atlas.
Is the Volkswagen Tiguan a reliable car?
The Tiguan has above-average predicted reliability ratings, and it is expected to be about average for long-term repair costs.
Miles per Gallon
Front-wheel drive (FWD) Tiguans return 22 mpg in the city, 29 mpg on the highway, and 25 mpg combined. 4Motion all-wheel drive (AWD) drops those numbers by 2 mpg across the board.
Lifespan
German vehicles have an unfair reputation for being unreliable, but the reality is that they last just as long as others with proper care and feeding.
