| 2015 | $12,517 | $11,401 – $12,671 |
| 2014 | $11,163 | $9,952 – $11,166 |
The Toyota Prius's current nationwide average price is $18,881, and its lowest point over the past year was $14,719. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023 and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Toyota Prius a good car?
Yes — the Toyota Prius is a strong choice if you want a hybrid that blends efficiency, practicality, and everyday comfort. The all-generations owner rating is 4.66/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners consistently praise its outstanding fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable ride. They also frequently highlight cargo space, safety, and strong value for money, which helps explain why the Prius remains such a popular commuter and daily-driver pick.
Expert reviews rate the 2016 and 2024 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs that show up in recent expert reviews are modest acceleration, real-world fuel economy that can trail expectations, and interior space that feels tighter in some newer versions.
35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Toyota Prius models reliable?
Owners consistently describe the Prius as dependable, efficient, and comfortable for daily driving. Expert reviews also reinforce its reputation for strong fuel economy, practical usability, and a long-running hybrid identity that has aged well.
- Owners rate the Toyota Prius between 4.33 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is generally tied more to age, mileage, and hybrid-component wear than to the Prius name itself, so a careful history check and maintenance review matter most.
What should I look for when buying a used Toyota Prius?
Across all model years, at 68% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 91.9% |
| 2025 | 89.7% |
| 2024 | 88.7% |
| 2023 | 83.2% |
| 2022 | 78.7% |
| 2021 | 69.8% |
| 2020 | 67.3% |
| 2019 | 61.7% |
| 2018 | 58.2% |
| 2017 | 55.5% |
| 2016 | 52.7% |
| 2015 | 51.7% |
| 2014 | 51% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0), with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and Proactive Driving Assist.
- Infotainment: Toyota Audio Multimedia with an 8-inch touchscreen on LE, XLE, and Nightshade Edition trims, plus a 12.3-inch touchscreen on Limited and as an option on XLE and Nightshade; wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA gave the Prius Nightshade Edition a 52 mpg rating in the combined, city, and highway categories.
Which Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2025 Toyota Prius offers these trims:
- LE: The entry trim brings the Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. It gives you the core Prius experience at the lowest price.
- XLE: This trim adds more comfort and convenience, and it can be equipped with the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen. It suits you if you want a more upscale daily driver without moving all the way to the top trim.
- Nightshade Edition: This trim adds black 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, and an exclusive Karashi paint color for a more distinctive look. It is the style-focused choice.
- Limited: This trim gets the larger 12.3-inch touchscreen and the most premium-feeling equipment in the lineup. It is the best fit if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.
What Toyota Prius do most buyers choose?
The Toyota Prius years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2026.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,489 | 46.7% |
| 2025 | 1,456 | 46.2% |
| 2026 | 959 | 51.8% |
| 2023 | 923 | 37.7% |
| 2014 | 770 | 31.3% |
| 2015 | 696 | 35.5% |
Higher-volume years tend to draw more shoppers because they offer more inventory to compare, which can make it easier to find the right color, trim, and price. They also often sit near the sweet spot between newer features and used-car value.
What is the Toyota Prius's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | $29,104 | −8.23% |
| 2021 | $20,865 | −0.95% |
| 2023 | $27,860 | −0.28% |
| 2022 | $22,918 | +0.8% |
| 2018 | $17,831 | +1.0% |
| 2024 | $29,550 | +1.02% |
| 2016 | $15,213 | +1.25% |
| 2020 | $21,118 | +1.43% |
| 2017 | $16,546 | +1.9% |
| 2019 | $19,739 | +2.71% |
| 2014 | $11,163 | +2.86% |
| 2015 | $12,517 | +4.26% |
The table shows a mixed pattern, with several newer years moving down while many older years are edging up. That makes recent Prius models especially interesting for used buyers who want to take advantage of softer pricing. At the same time, some older years are still climbing, which suggests steady demand for the nameplate.
The 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years are holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2015, 2014, and 2019 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Toyota Prius now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −8.23% versus a year ago, and the 2023 model is at −0.28%.
- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 46.2% good and great deals, and the 2023 model has 37.7%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $29,550. The Toyota Prius offers a long-standing reputation for efficiency, practicality, and dependable daily driving.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The Prius’ hybrid powertrain includes a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an 83-kilowatt electric motor, and Toyota says the net output measures 194 horsepower.
- Tech: Every 2025 Prius comes equipped with a Toyota Audio Multimedia system, and both systems include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
- Safety: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard in every 2025 Prius, and it adds Proactive Driving Assist.
- Starting price: The Prius is available with pricing that ranges from $29,545 to $36,560, including destination.

Overall, owners of the Toyota Prius across all model years appreciate its outstanding fuel economy, reliability, and comfortable ride, making it a popular choice for those focused on efficiency and daily commuting. Many drivers highlight features such as cargo space and safety, which contribute to its practicality and value for money. However, some common complaints include a lack of power and acceleration, as well as concerns about the sound system and interior noise levels. While some find the driving experience less thrilling, the Prius remains a top choice for budget-conscious drivers seeking a dependable and economical vehicle.

The car is great. Awesome MGPs. I love the way I fit in the cockpit, it feels like I'm driving a spaceship. Driving is super smooth. I wish I had a backup cam because it's difficult to see out of the back window. Decent turn radius. Extra hidden storage tray in the trunk. You can pull back on the joystick to slow down without wearing out the brakes. There is a filter button for when you are driving through a stinky area. Even though it is a higher tech car I still feel like I can work on it without have to buy a bunch of unique tools. Now I just need to figure out how to maximize the MPGs by driving slower. Even with my lead foot I average 41 MPG.

Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota Prius stands out by blending style, practicality, and affordability in a way that makes it easy to recommend for everyday use. It recently won the 2024 World Car Design of the Year, and it also offers a practical interior that can carry up to five people. For shoppers focused on running costs, it delivers up to 57 mpg in combined driving, and prices start at less than $30,000.
It is also appealing because it offers all-wheel drive and a plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving buyers more flexibility in how they want to configure it. Cargo space is limited, though, with up to 23.8 cubic feet behind the back seat, and the back seat is cramped. Even so, the Prius remains a strong value thanks to its fuel efficiency, good safety ratings, and comfortable front seats.
