Fittingly, the Xterra is geared towards outdoorsy folks who don't want a lot of fuss in their vehicles. The original Xterra had number of novel features, included a raised roof line to accommodate stadium seating, a configurable roof rack, and a first aid kit. It also came in eye-popping, un-Nissan-like colors, like bright yellow. An orange Xterra was introduced a short time later, but didn't sell well. The Xterra is a truck-based SUV. Originally it was based on the Frontier platform, but now the Frontier, Xterra, and Titan all share the same platform. As a truck-based SUV, the Xterra handles accordingly. The Xterra has won a number of awards, including Motor Trend's SUV of the year in 2000 and 2006. The Xterra is also a notable part of Nissan's late '90s turnaround from near bankruptcy.
