The Mercedes-Benz S-Class's current nationwide average price is $51,465, and its nationwide average price reached a low of $48,150 over the past year. Recently, prices have come down for the 2023, 2024, and 2025 models, making now a good time to shop recent model years.
Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a strong choice if you want a flagship luxury sedan with a long-standing reputation for comfort, performance, and advanced technology. The all-generations owner rating is 4.7/5 across every model year in the data.
Owners repeatedly praise the S-Class for its luxurious feel, comfortable and spacious interiors, smooth ride, and powerful engines. They also highlight the model’s craftsmanship and safety innovations, which reinforce its upscale character.
Expert reviews rate the 2022 and 2023 models among the highest across all years.
The main tradeoffs are high ownership costs, technology that can be frustrating to use in some years, and cargo space that can feel limited in recent models.
30.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Mercedes-Benz S-Class models reliable?
Owners consistently praise the S-Class for its luxurious feel, advanced technology, and strong performance, and expert coverage repeatedly highlights its polished ride and high-end craftsmanship. Across the model years in the data, the S-Class also earns strong owner ratings, which points to a generally satisfying ownership experience for shoppers who value comfort and refinement.
- Owners rate the Mercedes-Benz S-Class between 3.92 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is tied more to upkeep and repair costs than to the driving experience itself, so a well-documented service history matters a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Across all model years, at 73.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |

| 2026 | 97.8% |
| 2025 | 95.3% |
| 2024 | 92.2% |

| 2016 | 59.5% |
| 2015 | 57.8% |
| 2014 | 58.1% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is the efficiency leader of the lineup, with 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted.
Which Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers these trims:
- S 500: The entry point brings a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six with 442 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, plus a nine-speed automatic transmission and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive.
- S 580e: This plug-in hybrid adds an electric motor and a 22.7-kWh battery pack for 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range, making it the best-value trim for buyers who want strong efficiency and performance together.
- S 580: The V8-powered option increases output to 496 hp and 516 lb-ft while keeping the same flagship luxury character.
- AMG S 63 E Performance: This performance-focused plug-in hybrid combines a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with an electric motor for 791 hp and 1,055 lb-ft, plus an estimated 16 miles of electric-only propulsion.
What Mercedes-Benz S-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2016.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 1,216 | 31.7% |
| 2022 | 1,137 | 30.8% |
| 2016 | 986 | 31.3% |
| 2024 | 941 | 30.7% |
| 2015 | 890 | 30.6% |
| 2018 | 740 | 34.3% |
Higher-volume years usually give you more shopping choice, more price competition, and a better chance of finding the color, trim, and equipment mix you want. They also tend to be the easiest years to compare side by side because there are more listings in the market.
What is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | $77,879 | −13.54% |
| 2020 | $46,626 | −11.56% |
| 2021 | $59,183 | −10.79% |
| 2022 | $63,800 | −10.48% |
| 2016 | $29,355 | −10.16% |
| 2018 | $33,718 | −10.1% |
| 2025 | $127,697 | −9.34% |
| 2019 | $41,185 | −9.3% |
| 2015 | $24,841 | −8.57% |
| 2014 | $21,582 | −5.72% |
| 2017 | $38,540 | −4.32% |
| 2024 | $121,310 | −4.05% |
Most model years are down year over year, and several recent examples show double-digit declines. That pattern can work in your favor if you’re shopping used, because it creates more room to find a strong value on a luxury flagship. The smallest changes are concentrated in the older and newest years, which suggests those versions have been moving more steadily than the rest.
The 2024, 2017, and 2014 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

Should I buy a used Mercedes-Benz S-Class now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:
- Price trend: The 2025 model is at −9.34% versus a year ago, and the 2024 model is at −4.05%.
- Deal availability: The 2024 model has 30.7% good and great deals.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2023 model has the most listings at a current average price of $77,879. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a deeply polished cabin, a smooth ride, and the kind of flagship presence that has defined the nameplate for decades.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: Four S-Class models are available for 2025, largely distinguished by their powertrains. The entry-level S 500 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 442 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. The S 580 upgrades to a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 that increases power output to 496 hp and 516 lb-ft; it should be about a quarter of a second quicker to 60 mph.
- Tech: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system. Upgrading to the Pinnacle trim adds rear-seat amenities like an infotainment-system tablet, voice controls, a wireless charging pad, and an entertainment system with two 11.6-inch displays.
- Safety: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Starting price: The entry-level 2025 Mercedes-Benz S 500 has a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $118,900 (including $1,150 in destination charges).
If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

This model is particularly a great S-Class version. It is so much better than the successor model S. The features are pretty much the same but having the tactile models and not a giant Ipad in the middle made the car so much more user friendly. I hope the next version reverts back to tactile buttons and not all of these haptics that just do not work. It is a card with an excellent ride and the sound system is top notch. I have never really had a smooth quieter ride than the S Class Mercedes.

CarGurus recommends the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class

Summary
With 242 currently listed for sale near Richmond, VA and an average price of $21,586, 40.9% of 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.95 / 5 stars.
57.9% of 2015 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size luxury sedan that blends advanced technology with a deeply polished sense of craftsmanship. In the W222 generation, Mercedes gave the car a new aluminum hybrid body shell that significantly cut weight and improved rigidity, and the redesign also brought the first world-exclusive use of LEDs over traditional bulbs, with 500 light units throughout the interior and exterior. The cabin was a major part of the appeal, with wood and metal accents, selectable ambient lighting, and a layout that made the car feel especially upscale even by S-Class standards.
For 2015, Mercedes expanded the lineup with the S 550e plug-in hybrid, the revived S 600, and the AMG S 65. The S 550e made 329 system horsepower and offered 14 miles of electric range, while the S 600 made 523 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque and the S 65 delivered 621 horses and 738 pound-feet. That breadth of powertrains helped make the 2015 S-Class appealing to buyers who wanted either efficiency, effortless V12 luxury, or serious performance in the same nameplate.
It was also loaded with the kind of equipment that helped define the model’s reputation. The W222 brought adaptive cruise control with a stop function, forward automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, night vision, a rearview camera, and a digital instrument cluster, along with features such as self-closing doors and a power panoramic roof. The tradeoff is that many of the best features were optional, and ownership can still be expensive, with maintenance costs that can be steep. Owners also praise the smooth ride, powerful performance, and high-quality interior, though some note the price and the lack of cooled seats.
