Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2021 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.
- Infotainment: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is the efficiency leader of the lineup, with 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted.
Which Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers these trims:
- S 500: The entry point, with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six, 442 horsepower, and standard 4Matic all-wheel drive; it’s the best-value choice if you want the core S-Class experience.
- S 580e: The plug-in hybrid option, with 503 hp, 553 lb-ft, and an estimated 48 miles of electric range; it suits you if you want the strongest efficiency in the lineup.
- S 580: The V8 upgrade, with 496 hp and 516 lb-ft, for buyers who want more power while staying in the mainstream luxury range.
- AMG S 63 E Performance: The performance flagship, with a twin-turbo V8, electric motor, 791 hp, and 1,055 lb-ft, for buyers who want the most dramatic acceleration and the most exclusive character.
What Mercedes-Benz S-Class do most buyers choose?
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class years with the most listings are 2023, 2022, and 2016.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|

| 2019 | $40,524 | −10.09% |
| 2021 | $58,597 | −9.86% |
| 2018 | $34,335 | −7.83% |
| 2014 | $21,209 | −7.64% |
| 2015 | $25,005 | −7.18% |
| 2017 | $38,657 | −4.05% |
| 2024 | $119,019 | −3.69% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which can work in your favor if you’re shopping used. The biggest drops are concentrated in several older and recent model years, while a few years have declined more modestly. That pattern suggests there are opportunities across the lineup, especially if you’re flexible on model year.
The 2024, 2017, and 2015 model years have held their value best, with the smallest year-over-year price changes.

- Powertrain/efficiency: The entry-level S 500 comes with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six that produces 442 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, while the S 580e is capable of an estimated 48 miles of electric range and 23 mpg in combined driving once the battery is depleted.
- Tech: All 2025 Mercedes-Benz S-Class models have a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, a 12.8-inch infotainment touchscreen, a native navigation system with augmented reality video overlays, voice recognition, and a Burmester surround-sound system.
- Safety: Standard advanced safety features include forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, automated lane-change assist, evasive steering assistance, automatic reverse braking, a semi-automated parking system, and a surround-view camera system.

If you're buying used today, the 2023 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

Features are good not as much tech obviously as newer models but I'm good with that. Touchscreen feature i kinda miss , but I'll get over that. Great values for this car $37K..42k miles 1 owner ! Well taken care of..ride is so silky smooth , great space...will add for this size car trunk is rather small..used the space for rear seating..roomy vehicle..Love it !

This model is particularly a great S-Class version. It is so much better than the successor model S. The features are pretty much the same but having the tactile models and not a giant Ipad in the middle made the car so much more user friendly. I hope the next version reverts back to tactile buttons and not all of these haptics that just do not work. It is a card with an excellent ride and the sound system is top notch. I have never really had a smooth quieter ride than the S Class Mercedes.

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a luxury full-size sedan that blends strong performance with impressive technology and premium interior materials. Mercedes also introduced a new powertrain for 2023, giving the car added appeal for buyers who want a more modern setup in this latest-generation S-Class.
Its plug-in hybrid system is the main differentiator, and it can go far on electrons. That said, it is not much more efficient than the non-hybrid powertrain, so the benefit is more about convenience and electric driving range than a dramatic efficiency gain. It is also very expensive and does not qualify for a federal tax rebate, which may matter to shoppers weighing its upscale appeal against its cost.
