Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 3.0
- Infotainment: Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with a 14-inch touchscreen and Lexus Interface infotainment system
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the GX 550 will get 17 mpg in combined city and highway driving. On our Southern California fuel economy test route, we came close to that, at 16.8 mpg. On the mountainous evaluation loop, we observed 16 mpg.
Which Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2026 Lexus GX offers these trims:
- Premium: This is the entry point and gives you the GX’s core twin-turbo V6, full-time 4WD, and the model’s upscale, rugged character at the lowest price.
- Premium+: This adds extra equipment over Premium and is a strong value if you want more convenience without moving all the way up the range.
- Overtrail: This is the best-value pick if you want the GX’s off-road hardware, including rock rails, all-terrain tires, a locking rear differential, crawl control, hill-descent control, and E-KDSS.
- Overtrail+: This builds on Overtrail with additional luxury and convenience equipment for buyers who want trail capability with more amenities.
- Luxury: This trim shifts the GX toward a more comfort-focused setup with a higher-end feel and more premium appointments.
- Luxury+: This is the most upscale version, adding the most equipment for buyers who want the GX at its most luxurious.
What Lexus GX do most buyers choose?
The Lexus GX years with the most listings are 2024, 2023, and 2022.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 1,377 | 37.3% |
| 2023 | 1,327 | 37.5% |
| 2022 | 1,242 | 37.4% |
| 2025 | 927 | 37.4% |
| 2021 | 822 | 39.9% |
| 2020 | 800 | 39.3% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you the broadest mix of availability, pricing, and trim choices. They also sit in the sweet spot where newer design and equipment meet a still-large used inventory.

Customers say
The Lexus GX is a well-loved luxury SUV known for its impressive off-road capabilities, robust construction, and luxurious interior. Most owners appreciate its comfort and reliability, especially on long drives. The V8 engine is favored for its power, providing a smooth and confident drive. However, many drivers express concern about its fuel economy and find the technology outdated compared to newer competitors. Overall, the GX stands out for its rugged yet refined feel, making it a top choice for families and adventure enthusiasts alike.

Reviewed a 2010 Lexus GX on Oct 22, 2025
The 2010 Lexus GX is generally a great SUV with a V8 engine shared with the Lexus LS460. Although it looks like a rugged heavy duty SUV, the weight of it tends to cause it to wear down its components like the suspension and engine. Trouble issues tend to be oil leaks from numerous places like the valve covers and cam towers. Additional issues include the dreaded coolant leak of the valley pan gasket and radiator. If you drive a used one, if you smell a sweet odor emanating from the engine, it's probably one of those aforementioned leaks of coolant. Should you buy one? Yes, with the caveat that most if not all aspects of the engine, coolant and suspension have been addressed. Also check CarFax websites for services performed and NHTSA for known issues reported.

Good reliable features. Yes for the price it’s a good value since it’s a Toyota. It’s missing a backup camera and Bluetooth. I’d compare it to the 4Runner.

Why it stands out
The 2020 Lexus GX stands out because it blends old-school toughness with luxury-SUV comfort. Even after a facelift, it remains one of the most dated luxury SUVs on the market, but that age also helps explain why it is so capable. For buyers who value off-road ability and a comfortable cabin more than the latest trends, that combination gives the GX a clear identity.
Lexus updated the GX for 2020 with fresh styling to make it more memorable, but the SUV still carries the feel of one of the oldest vehicles offered today. That dated character is a drawback if you want modern technology or especially exciting styling, both of which are listed as weaknesses. Still, the GX’s appeal is straightforward: it is comfortable, it has strong off-road capability, and it offers the kind of robust build and luxurious interior that many owners appreciate.
For shoppers who want a luxury SUV that can handle more than just pavement, the 2020 Lexus GX remains distinctive. It is not the most advanced choice, and its styling may not win everyone over, but its durability, comfort, and capability make it memorable in a segment where many rivals have moved away from specialization.
