28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
Are Ford Mustang models reliable?
Owners and experts consistently praise the Mustang for its performance, driving enjoyment, and styling, and those strengths show up repeatedly across the model years in the data. The car's broad range of engines and trims also gives you plenty of ways to choose a version that fits your priorities.
- Owners rate the Ford Mustang between 4.42 and 5.0 out of 5 stars across all model years in the data.
For used buyers, long-term ownership risk depends heavily on model year and maintenance history, so a well-documented example is the safest path.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, accident-free inventory is solid at 75.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93.6% |
| 2025 | 92% |
| 2024 | 90.9% |
| 2023 | 87.8% |
| 2022 | 79.1% |
| 2021 | 73.7% |
| 2020 | 68.9% |
| 2019 | 64% |
| 2018 | 60.7% |
| 2017 | 56.3% |
| 2016 | 57.1% |
| 2015 | 58.6% |
| 2014 | 61.3% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: Standard safety features for all Mustangs include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams.
- Infotainment: All 2024 Mustangs come with a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, with Sync 4 infotainment, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers...
- EcoBoost: The EcoBoost starts at $32,515 and gives you the turbocharged 2.3-liter engine, the 13.2-inch touchscreen, and the updated cabin design; it is the best-value trim if you want the Mustang experience at the lowest starting price.
- GT: The GT starts at $44,090 and adds the 5.0-liter V8, six-speed manual, and stronger muscle-car character for buyers who want the classic V8 formula.
- GT Convertible: The GT Convertible is available only in Premium trim and starts at $54,110, adding open-air driving to the V8 setup for shoppers who want the most premium version in the lineup.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,729 | 33.1% |
| 2025 | 3,663 | 33.3% |
| 2023 | 3,224 | 33.3% |
| 2020 | 2,226 | 29.8% |
| 2019 | 2,067 | 29.5% |
| 2018 | 2,052 | 29.9% |
These higher-volume model years tend to be the most popular used picks because they combine broad availability with strong deal percentages. That gives you more inventory to compare while still keeping a healthy share of listings priced as good or great deals.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2018 | $22,181 | −5.25% |
| 2016 | $19,761 | −4.07% |
| 2019 | $27,174 | −3.24% |
| 2020 | $27,032 | −3.15% |
| 2017 | $21,828 | −2.17% |
| 2021 | $31,460 | −1.66% |
| 2015 | $20,453 | −0.18% |
| 2022 | $34,194 | +1.6% |
| 2014 | $15,854 | +2.65% |
| 2023 | $33,307 | +9.49% |
Most Mustang model years in the table are moving lower year over year, which creates better entry points for used buyers. A few years are still rising, so the market is not moving in one direction across the board. The sharpest declines are concentrated in the newer and mid-cycle examples, while some older and recent years are holding firmer.
The 2015 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2023, 2014, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

Why it stands out
The 2025 Ford Mustang stands out because it keeps the classic Mustang formula intact while offering a wide spread of performance choices. It remains a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible, and it is built at Ford’s Flat Rock production facility in Michigan. For shoppers, that means the car still delivers the familiar Mustang character, but with enough variety to suit both everyday driving and more serious performance ambitions.
In 2025, the Mustang is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine in base and mainstream trims, while upper trims use 5.0-liter V8 engines producing 480 hp or 500 hp, depending on trim. A 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. Ford also offered a 60th Anniversary special-edition package in 2025, with only 1,965 produced in a special Brittany Blue color. That mix of engines, transmissions, and special packaging helps explain why the Mustang remains appealing to buyers who want a sports car with broad appeal and strong heritage.
There are also a few cautions to keep in mind. The 2024 and 2025 Ford Mustangs have been reported to suffer from powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, issues with the limited-slip differential, and problems with the electronic stability control system. The EcoBoost engine may get good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel. Even so, the 2025 Mustang’s combination of recognizable styling, rear-drive dynamics, and multiple performance levels keeps it distinctive in a market where few rivals still offer this kind of traditional muscle-car formula.
