What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 74.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93% |
| 2025 | 91.4% |
| 2024 | 89.8% |
| 2023 | 86.8% |

| 2016 | 55.8% |

| 2014 | 58.9% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates the four-cylinder EcoBoost will return 22 mpg city, 33 mpg highway, and 26 mpg in combined driving. The V8-powered GT is rated at 15/24 mpg city/highway and 18 mpg combined with the automatic transmission.
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: The entry engine is the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the most accessible way into the lineup.
- EcoBoost High Performance: This version adds the Torsen limited-slip differential, leather steering wheel, stickier and larger tires, and upgraded Brembo brake calipers, making it the best-value choice if you want sharper handling and stronger hardware.
- GT: The 5.0-liter V8 brings 480 hp and 415 lb-ft, plus a standard six-speed manual and available 10-speed automatic; it suits you if you want the classic muscle-car experience.
- GT Premium: This trim adds the GT’s V8 character with the more upscale equipment set and is the one to choose if you want the GT Convertible, which is offered only in Premium trim.
- Dark Horse: At the top of the range, this trim produces 500 hp and adds several other performance enhancements for buyers who want the most serious performance focus.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2024, 2025, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 | 3,368 | 33.3% |
| 2025 | 3,342 | 33.7% |
| 2023 | 2,972 | 33% |
| 2020 | 2,261 | 30.5% |
| 2021 | 2,145 | 30.3% |
| 2019 | 2,091 | 30% |
These higher-volume years tend to be popular because they give you a strong mix of availability, newer features, and a healthy spread of prices. More listings also usually make it easier to compare trims and find the right equipment level for your budget.
What is the Ford Mustang's resale value?
| Model Year | Current Avg. Price | Year-Over-Year Change |

| 2025 | $42,679 | −9.53% |
| 2024 | $37,888 | −4.66% |
| 2020 | $26,570 | −4.58% |
| 2016 | $19,475 | −4.26% |
| 2019 | $26,591 | −4.0% |
| 2017 | $21,603 | −3.58% |
| 2018 | $22,690 | −2.75% |

| 2023 | $32,739 | +7.25% |
| 2014 | $16,090 | +7.56% |
Most model years in the table are down year over year, which creates more opportunity for used buyers. A few years are moving higher, so the market is not moving in one direction across the board. The biggest drops are concentrated in the newer listings shown here, while some older and mid-cycle years are still firming up.
The 2015 model year is holding steady, with prices close to flat year-over-year.
The 2014, 2023, and 2022 model years have held their value best, with prices flat to rising year-over-year.

Should I buy a used Ford Mustang now or wait for the next model?
Buy now if:

- Deal availability: The 2025 model has 33.7% good and great deals, and the 2024 model has 33.3%.
- Sweet-spot year: The 2024 model has the most listings at a current average price of $37,888. The Ford Mustang offers iconic styling and a strong performance character that make it easy to shop across trims and years.
Consider waiting if:
- Powertrain/efficiency: The 2024 Mustang's entry-level engine is the EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 315 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, and the GT's Coyote 5.0-liter V8 is good for 480 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque.
- Tech: All 2024 Mustangs come with a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen and a digital instrument cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with Amazon Alexa integration.
- Safety: Standard safety features for all Mustangs include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams.
- Starting price: The base 2024 Ford Mustang EcoBoost has a starting price of $32,515.
If you're buying used today, the 2024 model year offers the best mix of value and availability. If you want the latest tech and features, it may be worth waiting for the next model year's inventory to build up.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

CarGurus recommends the 2025 Ford Mustang

Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2025 Ford Mustang 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2025 Ford Mustang stands out as one of the most enduring names in American performance, and its appeal still rests on the formula that has defined it for decades: a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout in coupe and convertible body styles. It remains a car with broad performance appeal, offering a range of trims and engines that let buyers choose between everyday usability and more serious muscle-car character. That flexibility is part of what has kept the Mustang distinctive for so long.
For 2025, the Mustang is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine in base and mainstream trims, while upper trims use 5.0-liter V8 engines rated at 480 hp or 500 hp, depending on trim. A 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. Ford also offered a 60th Anniversary special-edition package for 2025, with only 1,965 produced in a special Brittany Blue color. Those choices give the car a wide spread of personalities, from accessible performance to more traditional V8 power.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. Reports for the 2024 and 2025 Ford Mustangs have included powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, issues with the limited-slip differential, and problems with the electronic stability control system. The EcoBoost engine may deliver good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel. Even so, the 2025 Mustang remains appealing because it combines recognizable styling, strong performance options, and enough variety to suit different kinds of buyers.
