What should I look for when buying a used Dodge Challenger?
Across all model years, at 67.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2023 | 82.4% |
| 2022 | 78.2% |
| 2021 | 68.7% |
| 2020 | 61.3% |
| 2019 | 58.5% |
| 2018 | 56% |
| 2017 | 56.5% |
| 2016 | 54.1% |

Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights, and a low-resolution reversing camera
- Infotainment: Uconnect 4 touchscreen infotainment system with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- Fuel efficiency: 15 mpg in combined driving
Which Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2023 Dodge Challenger offers these trims:
- SXT: the entry rear-wheel-drive version in the lineup, suited to buyers who want the Challenger’s styling and everyday usability at the lowest starting point.
- Black Ghost: the special-edition halo model with exclusive retro detailing, premium interior materials, and the most dramatic presence in the lineup.
What Dodge Challenger do most buyers choose?
The Dodge Challenger years with the most listings are 2022, 2023, and 2021.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | 3,361 | 29.8% |
| 2023 | 2,508 | 29.7% |
| 2021 | 2,364 | 28.6% |
| 2020 | 2,047 | 28.2% |
| 2019 | 1,759 | 26.5% |
| 2018 | 1,614 | 26.4% |

| 2017 | $20,550 | −3.47% |

| 2014 | $16,447 | +0.97% |

Most model years are down year over year, which is helpful if you want to buy used after the sharpest price moves have already happened. A few newer and older years are moving differently, so the market is not falling in a perfectly uniform way. The smallest changes are clustered near flat, while the largest drops are concentrated in the middle of the lineup.

Customers say
The Dodge Challenger has cemented its place as an iconic American muscle car over the years, winning over drivers with its impressive power, comfort, and distinctive retro styling. Owners consistently praise the powerful performance and enjoyable driving experience, reveling in its muscle car heritage. However, some criticisms include cramped rear seating, fuel economy concerns, and a desire for improved interior quality and features. Overall, the Challenger continues to be favored for its blend of classic appeal and modern technology, despite some noted drawbacks in practicality and refinement.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Dodge Challenger stands out as a modern muscle car that keeps a classic formula alive. It is part of the Challenger’s third generation, a long-running design that was largely unchanged over the years but kept fresh with a variety of powertrains, head-turning colors, numerous special editions, and a 2015 facelift. It was also built to compete with the Ford Mustang and the Chevrolet Camaro, and its appeal comes from that mix of old-school attitude and broad performance variety.
For 2022, the Challenger’s strengths include its user-friendly Uconnect infotainment system with a touchscreen, Android Auto, and Apple CarPlay, along with a practical five-passenger cabin. It was designed on a platform suitable for both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and the model offered a wide range of Pentastar V6 and Hemi V8 engines, plus manual and automatic transmissions. Performance-minded shoppers could also find features such as adaptive suspension, launch control, Brembo brakes, and Mopar tuning options, while special editions added visual flair through spoilers, hood scoops, unique fascia and grille designs, special upholstery, and distinctive badging.
There are tradeoffs, though. The Challenger’s size and long production run meant many examples were neglected or abused, and some model years in this generation are known for engine problems. Even so, the 2022 Challenger remains appealing for buyers who want a muscle car with strong personality, lots of configuration choices, and a cabin that blends retro style with modern tech.
