Why it stands out

The 2027 BMW 5 Series is distinctive because it sits within a long-running nameplate that has always blended performance, luxury, and a practical four-door layout. BMW’s own buying guide describes the 5 Series as a function-over-form sports sedan that is taut and austere in appearance but very satisfying to drive and luxurious without being opulent. It also notes that the model has traditionally leaned more toward performance than luxury, which helps explain why the 5 Series has long appealed to buyers who want a midsize sedan with real driving credibility.

What stands out most about the current-generation 5 Series is how much space, technology, and power it brings to the table. BMW says this generation is the biggest 5 Series ever made, with more passenger room but slightly less trunk space than before. The cabin is dominated by the curved display, which combines a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen under one panel. On the gas side, the lineup includes a 530i with 255 horsepower and a 540i with 375 horsepower, while BMW also offers the plug-in hybrid 550e and the electric i5. That breadth gives the 5 Series a wide appeal, from traditional sedan buyers to shoppers interested in electrification.

There are also a few tradeoffs worth noting. BMW’s latest iDrive system is described as complex to learn, and reviewers have been frustrated by the lack of touch controls. Some of the best driver-assistance features, including adaptive cruise control with lane centering and a hands-free mode, are also tied to extra-cost option packages. Even so, the 2027 BMW 5 Series remains appealing because it combines strong performance, a roomy cabin, and a broad range of powertrains in a package that still feels unmistakably like a 5 Series.
