New & Used 2026 BMW M5 for Sale nearMountain View, CA

Is the 2026 BMW M5 a good car?

The 2026 BMW M5 earns an expert rating of 7.17/10. The model scores 9/10 across Performance and Technology.

BMW positions it as a high-performance version of the midsize 5 Series, and that mission comes through clearly: you get racetrack-and-autobahn capability without giving up everyday usability. The first-ever plug-in hybrid powertrain adds to the appeal, and the car’s blend of performance and practicality is especially notable when rivals from Audi and Mercedes-Benz are on hiatus.

The trade-offs are real, though. The design may be polarizing, and the dashboard and interior are described as awkward and gaudy.

With 36.2% of listings priced as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2026 BMW M5 reliable?

The 2026 BMW M5 is built around a plug-in hybrid setup with a twin-turbo V8, an eight-speed automatic, and BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system, so it’s engineered for serious performance as well as everyday use. BMW also gives you a broad range of chassis and powertrain adjustments, which suggests a highly developed and well-integrated mechanical package.

The performance content points to a system that’s meant to be flexible rather than fragile: you can tailor steering, brake feel, dampers, powertrain response, exhaust sound, and regenerative braking, and the car offers multiple drive modes for different conditions. The cost-effectiveness content also notes that the onboard charger’s maximum power rate rises for 2026, which is a useful ownership improvement.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that this is a complex, high-output performance hybrid, so maintenance and repair costs can be substantial if the car has been neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2026 BMW M5?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a history report and verify that the car’s service records match its mileage and use. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a performance hybrid like this, and you’ll want to pay close attention to tire wear, brake condition, and any signs that the car has been driven hard. Because the M5 is loaded with technology and performance hardware, condition matters more than mileage alone.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard car already brings M-specific styling, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with paddle shifters, well-bolstered Merino leather front seats, and a glass roof with a power sunshade. The Touring wagon adds a small rear spoiler and underfloor bracing, while the sedan can also be equipped with a carbon fiber roof. The base setup is already rich, so the biggest gaps are in comfort and appearance extras rather than core capability.
• Powertrain: You get a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8, an eight-speed automatic, an electric motor integrated with the transmission, and a 14.8-kilowatt-hour battery pack. Output is 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, and BMW’s xDrive system can decouple the front axle for rear-wheel-drive behavior.
• Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. The Driving Assistant Professional Package adds automated lane centering and Traffic Jam Assistant, while the M Drive Professional Package adds a Track mode that turns the aids off completely.
• Infotainment: The standard BMW Curved Display combines a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and 14.9-inch touchscreen. You also get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, iDrive 8.5, a 5G antenna, an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system, digital key functionality, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The sedan is rated at 14 mpg combined in hybrid mode and offers 25 miles of electric range. The wagon is rated at 13 mpg combined and offers 24 miles of electric range.

Which 2026 BMW M5 trim should I buy?

The 2026 BMW M5 is offered in 2 trim levels: sedan and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• sedan: This is the lighter, quicker choice, with a 3.4-second 0–60 mph claim and 25 miles of electric range. It’s the better pick if you want the classic M5 formula and the strongest performance numbers.
• Touring: This is the best-value choice if you want the M5’s speed with more everyday versatility. It keeps the same core powertrain and adds wagon practicality, making it the smarter fit if you need cargo flexibility without giving up the M5 experience.

The safety package is split by package rather than trim, so if you want the most advanced driver assistance, look for the Driving Assistant Professional Package.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard driver-assistance features include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control with automatic speed limit adjustment, blind-spot monitors, parking sensors, and Backup Assistant. Should I buy a 2026 BMW M5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2026 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2026 if:

• 36.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 98.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• BMW adds a more powerful onboard charger and more paint options this year.

Consider the 2025 if:

• It delivers the same 717-horsepower plug-in hybrid formula with up to 25 miles of electric driving.

The bottom line: If you want the latest version of this M5’s already strong formula, the 2026 is the straightforward pick. If you’re price-sensitive, the 2025 is worth a look because its core performance and usability story is essentially the same.
