Is the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 a good car?

The overview points to a more competitive and enjoyable electric SUV than before, with a more powerful rear-drive motor, increased range, and a next-generation infotainment system. It also comes across as a strong value for money, with a comfortable ride and standard advanced safety features.

The main trade-offs are the unimpressive electric range on the base model and the touch-sensing controls. It also has seat-sensor vehicle on/off activation, which can be annoying in daily use.

With 40.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a well-priced example.

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The overview and expert notes both point to a vehicle that feels better sorted for 2024, with improved comfort, stronger performance, and upgraded technology. The expert test-drive summary also emphasizes that the updated ID.4 is more polished and appealing than before.

It also benefits from two years or 20,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery, charging behavior, and cabin electronics are all working as intended.

What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Volkswagen ID.4?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on an EV where charging habits and software behavior matter. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, brake feel, infotainment operation, and whether the charging system works properly at home and on DC fast chargers.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes base, S, and S Plus trims. The base model is the most stripped-down, while the higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment.
• Powertrain: The Pro models use a single rear motor, while AWD Pro models add a front motor for dual-motor traction and quicker acceleration. The 62-kWh models use the previous motor setup and make less power.
• Safety package: IQ.Drive is standard and includes Travel Assist and Emergency Assist, along with post-collision braking. The parking assist system with Memory Parking is also available.
• Infotainment: Pro models get a 12.9-inch touchscreen with an improved user experience, wireless Apple CarPlay, and a battery preconditioning feature for charging stops.
• Range & charging: EPA range reaches 291 miles with RWD Pro models and 263 miles with AWD Pro models, while the 62-kWh models are rated at 206 miles. The 82-kWh battery can recharge in eight hours or less on Level 2 home charging, and DC fast charging from 10% to 80% takes about 30 minutes.
• Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, confirm the car charges normally at home and on DC fast chargers, and review how much of the battery warranty remains. A clean charging history and consistent range are especially important on a used EV.

Which 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 3 trim levels: base, S, and S Plus.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the least expensive path into the ID.4, but it is also the most basic. If you want the lowest entry price and can live with fewer amenities, this is the trim to start with.
• S: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more complete mix of comfort and convenience without pushing all the way to the top of the range.
• S Plus: Choose this if you want the most upscale ID.4 experience, including the available premium audio setup and the most premium-feeling equipment mix.

The safety package centers on IQ.Drive, which is standard across the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Volkswagen ID.4?

The market is leaning in your favor right now, especially if you want to compare multiple listings and negotiate from a position of strength.

• Deal availability: 40.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,782 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.65% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 92.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $23,122, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?

The current average of $23,312 sits slightly below last year's $24,708.

That softer pricing suggests the ID.4 is currently more buyer-friendly than seller-friendly. If you plan to sell later, you should expect the market to reward well-kept examples more than average ones, especially if they have strong equipment and a clean history.

The updated range, improved tech, and stronger performance should help support demand, but the current price trend means you may not see rapid appreciation. A well-maintained ID.4 with desirable features should still be easier to move than a neglected one.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?

The 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 earns favorable ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluations are incomplete.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen’s IQ.Drive suite is standard and includes Travel Assist and Emergency Assist, along with post-collision braking. Travel Assist helps with following distance and lane centering, while Emergency Assist can bring the vehicle to a controlled stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

The safety setup is strong overall, but the incomplete IIHS testing means you should still review the latest crash-test status before buying.

Should I buy a 2024 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2024 if:

• 40.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 92.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.65% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The updated infotainment system, stronger rear-drive motor, and improved range make this year feel more polished.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $22,529, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $23,312 average.
• It emphasizes affordability and a broader push toward mainstream EV usability.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded ID.4, the 2024 is the stronger pick thanks to its improved power, range, and technology. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2023 remains the more budget-friendly route.
