CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Toyota 4Runner
overall

Summary
With 3,786 currently listed for sale and an average price of $46,685.00, 33.0% of 2024 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Toyota 4Runner 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 4.5 / 10.
91.8% of 2024 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. It remains an accomplished off-road-capable vehicle, and its all-terrain abilities are a major part of its appeal. Buyers who want a traditional SUV with plenty of cargo space will also find that the 4Runner has practical strengths beyond trail use.
At the same time, the 2024 Toyota 4Runner shows its age in ways that matter to many shoppers. Its aging platform is in desperate need of a full redesign, and it trails newer rivals when it comes to technology, safety features, fuel efficiency, and power. The driving experience is also held back by poor handling, sluggish performance, and poor fuel economy. Even so, its reputation for toughness and its spacious, utility-first character continue to make it appealing to buyers who value capability over refinement.

The features are great. However, I have it a 4 because the color is off!!! If you look at the photo it is obviously Red. The description says it is Terra. I called the dealership and it is defininetly not red but a brown color, terra cotta.

Generally — the 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 4.5/10 expert rating, which points to a vehicle that appeals strongly to a specific kind of buyer. The standout strength is Form and function at 6/10.
Owners consistently praise its spaciousness, power, and aesthetics, and they also highlight the improved ride quality plus features like heated seats and blind spot monitoring. The trade-offs are familiar: fuel economy is a weak point, and daily commuting can be noisy.
That lines up with the 4Runner’s use case as a rugged, utility-first SUV with real off-road capability and plenty of cargo space. If you want a traditional SUV feel more than modern polish, it fits that brief well.
Only 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than broadly discounted.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. The owner feedback also points to a reputation for reliability and durability, with language that emphasizes toughness and a vehicle you can count on over time.
The expert evaluation reinforces that dependability angle by describing it as a vehicle with a strong reputation for reliability and durability. It also notes that the 4Runner’s long-running formula has aged gracefully, which supports the idea that it can be a steady long-term companion.
For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about basic dependability and more about living with an older design that can feel dated and less refined over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has seen trail use or heavy commuting. Focus on overall condition, because this model’s appeal depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and whether its rugged hardware has been used hard.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The cabin is old-school, with an analog instrument panel and a comparatively tiny eight-inch infotainment touchscreen, while the range-topping TRD Pro adds underbody skid plates, all-terrain tires, and a beefy tubular roof rack.
- Powertrain: Every 2024 4Runner uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic; most trims are rear-wheel drive with four-wheel drive available, while the TRD Pro comes standard with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case.
- Safety package: The standard suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert; the TRD Pro and Limited add a surround-view camera system, and only the Limited gets front and rear parking proximity sensors.
- Infotainment: You get standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on an eight-inch touchscreen, and the system does not include some of the off-road-specific apps and gauges found in some rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Runner is rated at 16 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 17 mpg combined.
Which 2024 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 2 trim levels: SR5 and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the value-oriented starting point, and it makes the 4Runner’s core formula accessible if you want the rugged SUV experience without paying for the top-end off-road extras.
- TRD Pro: This is the one to choose if you want the most serious hardware, including standard four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case, skid plates, all-terrain tires, and the premium JBL audio system.
The safety package is broadly strong across the lineup, but the Limited is the only trim that adds front and rear parking proximity sensors.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it makes sense to shop carefully and compare listings rather than rush.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,919 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.98% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 91.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,830.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $46,701 sits slightly above last year's $44,911.
That upward move suggests the market is still willing to pay for this model year’s rugged reputation and utility-first appeal. For a future seller, that can help support value retention, especially if your 4Runner is clean, well maintained, and equipped in a desirable trim.
The price trend also shows that buyers continue to respond to the 4Runner’s durability and off-road identity even as newer rivals offer more modern features. If demand stays steady, that should help keep resale interest healthy.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2024 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings for overall and frontal crash protection, five-star ratings for side impacts, and three-star ratings in rollover evaluations from NHTSA. The IIHS gave it a Good result for the original moderate frontal overlap crash test and side protection tests, but the newer small overlap frontal test includes incomplete results with some Marginal and Poor ratings.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. The TRD Pro and Limited trims also add a surround-view camera system, while only the Limited gets front and rear parking proximity sensors.
The main caveat is that some of the safety tech can feel oversensitive, and the mixed crash-test results are worth weighing if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2024 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 91.7% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices are up 3.98% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It remains a rugged, off-road-focused SUV with strong reliability and durability.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,448, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $46,701 average.
- It keeps the classic SUV formula while adding standard blind-spot monitoring and a special-edition option.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $51,133, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $46,701 average.
- It brings a full redesign with more capability, comfort, technology, and efficiency.
The bottom line: If you want the current-generation 4Runner’s proven ruggedness and can find a clean, fairly priced example, the 2024 is the straightforward choice. If price matters most, the 2023 is the better value play; if you want a more modern 4Runner experience, the 2025 is the smarter long-term direction.
