Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a compact and midsize truck with a long-earned reputation for reliability and a rugged personality. It has become a default choice for many shoppers because it is the ideal size for many situations, and its styling gives it a distinctive look that many buyers find appealing. In TRD Pro trim, it can also deliver genuine off-road brilliance, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable name in the segment.
That appeal comes with tradeoffs. The Tacoma is described as having poor fuel economy, a cramped back seat, and outdated technology, so it is not the most modern or spacious option. Even so, its sturdy build, strong resale value, and off-road capability make it attractive to buyers who value durability and capability more than comfort or the latest features.

Car features are great. Owning a Toyota is great and they have great qualities that last. The truck is missing is more affordable but they do last forever if drivin correctly. Toyota tacoma do not compare to any other truck on the market.

Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.27/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, ruggedness, and off-road capability, and they also point to strong resale value and a sturdy build. The Tacoma’s size and versatility come through as a good fit if you want a truck that feels manageable without giving up capability.
The trade-offs are clear: the interior can feel tight, and some shoppers wish for more modern features. That lines up with the truck’s use-case appeal as a rugged, versatile pickup rather than a class-leading comfort or tech choice.
Only 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you may need to shop carefully to find the best value.
Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.27/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a truck that feels built for long-term use. The expert assessment also describes it as having a hard-earned reputation for bullet-proof reliability, which reinforces that impression.
On the road, the Tacoma’s durability-focused setup and off-road hardware support the sense that it’s built to be counted on over time. Toyota also includes a straightforward ownership experience, though the truck’s age shows in other areas.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about core toughness and more about living with an older-feeling truck that may ask you to compromise on refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully, even when the listing looks clean. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because condition can vary a lot by trim and use case, especially on trucks that may have seen hard work or off-road use. Focus on wear items, interior condition, and signs that the truck was used the way its rugged image suggests.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from SR to TRD Pro, with the SR trim described as the most spartan and the Limited trim as the most upscale. Base-trim shoppers should pay close attention to the simpler interior materials and fewer comfort touches.
- Powertrain: Lower trims use a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque and is the better choice for most buyers.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Some trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.
- Infotainment: Base SR trims use a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get an 8-inch screen. All Tacomas include Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and SiriusXM satellite radio.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 20 mpg city, 23 highway, and 21 combined for the four-cylinder RWD model, 19/22/20 with four-cylinder 4WD, 19/24/21 for the V6 RWD model, 18/22/20 for the V6 4WD model, and 17/21/18 for manual-transmission models.
Which 2023 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Trail Special Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the Tacoma’s core toughness at the lowest price. You give up the richer materials and more upscale feel found higher up the range, so it suits you best if value matters more than comfort.
- SR5: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday appeal without jumping all the way to the off-road-focused models. It also gets the new SX package if you want a darker appearance treatment.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more styled Tacoma with a stronger personality than the lower trims. It fits you if you like the Tacoma look but do most of your driving on pavement.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the trim to target if you want the Tacoma’s off-road hardware without going all the way to the top. It’s the right middle ground for buyers who actually plan to use the truck’s trail capability.
- TRD Pro: This is the most capable and most distinctive choice, with underbody skid pads, a TRD-tuned suspension, a TRD sport exhaust, and a unique grille. It suits you if off-road performance is the priority and you want the most rugged version.
- Trail Special Edition: Pick this if you want a more specialized Tacoma with a distinct personality. It makes sense if you want something less common than the mainstream trims.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, but other Toyotas offer a more robust version, and the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,528 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.66% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $35,373.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $36,424 sits slightly below last year's $37,419.
That price movement suggests the Tacoma has softened a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and may also limit how much depreciation you face in the near term. Because the model still has strong demand and a reputation for reliability, it should remain easier to resell than many trucks with weaker brand loyalty.
If you buy well, the Tacoma’s broad appeal can help protect your exit value later. The key is to avoid overpaying today, since resale strength works best when your purchase price is already disciplined.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.27/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Tacoma safe?
It was not awarded a Top Safety Pick award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
It earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with five-star ratings in side-impact tests and lower marks in frontal crash and rollover tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Some trims also add blind-spot monitoring, rear- and side parking distance sensors, and a surround-view camera.
The main caveat is that the Tacoma does not include lane-keeping assist or rear automatic emergency braking, and its safety tech is less robust than what you’ll find in some other Toyotas.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.66% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.27/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends rugged styling with proven off-road capability and a familiar, easy-to-use setup.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $33,438, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $36,424 average.
- It offers modern tech and safety features with strong off-road appeal.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $38,688, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $36,424 average.
- It brings a ground-up redesign with standard advanced driver-assistance tech.
The bottom line: If you want the familiar Tacoma formula and a market with decent deal availability, the 2023 is the safer all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path. If you want the newest redesign and can spend more, the 2024 is the upgrade to consider.
