CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 906 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,484, 32.2% of 2023 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Prius 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
85.8% of 2023 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out first for its new look. After decades of being known more for efficiency than style, it arrives as one of the better-looking new cars to hit the market recently, and that sleeker design is a major part of its appeal. It also brings a huge jump in power without giving up the fuel-sipping character that made the Prius famous, so it feels more modern without abandoning its core mission.
That combination makes the 2023 Toyota Prius an especially interesting hatchback for buyers who want efficiency but do not want to settle for a car that feels dated. It also comes with impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort features. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: it carries a significant price bump over the previous model, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased.

I got my XLE for 1000 under retail price. Right place right time I guess and so far I only have a few miles on it. So not to much to say other than it has remote start that is not listed on the window sticker and all the controls are easy to do. My biggest pet peeve is the antenna does not pick up my stations that my other Prius did in my driveway but they do come in down the road. Love the detail on the body lines that doesn’t look like the old ones. So far fuel mileage is way off on the estimate left for cruising range. Happy with Prius and will continue to buy them. Had the last one for almost 10 years so fingers crossed.

The information on the dash display might take some time to become familiar with. On my test drive I had trouble finding information that I wanted, partly because the graphics seem small compared to in my older Prius.

| Year-Round High | $28,552 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,010 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +1.77% |

Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Prius earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
The 2023 Prius stands out as a hatchback that pairs a sleeker design with a big jump in power, while still keeping the efficiency focus that defines the nameplate. It also brings impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort features, which makes it appealing if you want a modern-feeling hybrid for everyday use.
The trade-offs are real, though: the price is up significantly versus the previous model, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased.
The model’s 33.0% good-or-great deal rate suggests there are still worthwhile listings to find.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Prius is presented as a hybrid that keeps its efficiency-first mission while adding more power and a more polished driving feel. Its new powertrain is described as more athletic and eager than before, with ample acceleration for everyday driving, and the ride remains composed over rough surfaces.
The performance notes also point to a car that feels more modern and more capable without losing the fuel-sipping character that made the Prius famous. On the cost side, the higher starting price is a notable change, but the model’s standard equipment and efficiency help support the ownership case.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is paying more upfront for a car whose value depends on whether you prioritize efficiency and modern features over maximum space and low purchase price.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing cars with similar prices. Focus on overall condition, since the model’s value proposition depends heavily on whether the car has been well cared for and whether the equipment you want is actually present.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE brings the essentials, including the standard safety suite and an 8-inch touchscreen, while the XLE adds 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key. The Limited adds the larger screen, glass roof, JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate, and Digital Key.
- Powertrain: You get a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. FWD models make 194 total horsepower, while AWD models make 196 total horsepower, and the car uses a continuously variable automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, while Advanced Park is available on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The LE and XLE come with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE can be optioned with a 12.3-inch screen, and that larger display is standard on the Limited. All trims also get a 7-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The model keeps its fuel-sipping character, and AWD adds $1,400 across the lineup.
Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?

- XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a stronger mix of comfort and convenience features, including 19-inch wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most equipment, including the larger screen, glass roof, JBL audio, ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, power tailgate, and Digital Key.

- Deal availability: 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 903 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.77% year-over-year.

What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $28,506 sits slightly above last year's $28,010.
That year-over-year increase suggests the market has remained supportive of this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A stable or rising price trend usually means buyers still see value in the car’s mix of efficiency, style, and standard equipment.
The Prius also benefits from strong shopper interest relative to its segment, which can help keep demand steady when you eventually list it. If you buy well and keep the car in good condition, that should help preserve more of its value over time.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?
The 2023 Prius has Toyota’s latest suite of active safety features bundled together as Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
That standard suite includes radar-based adaptive cruise control that works at any speed, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. You also get stability control, traction control, eight airbags including seat-mounted side airbags, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts.
All of those driver-assistance features are standard on every trim, so you do not need to move up the lineup to get the core safety package. The Limited trim can also be optioned with Advanced Park.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 33.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 1.77% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a major redesign with more power and a sleeker look.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,975, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,506 average.
- It adds available plug-in hybrid power and up to 57 mpg combined.
The bottom line: If you want the newer design and strong standard safety at a lower average price, the 2023 is the smarter starting point. If you’re willing to spend more for the next model year’s added efficiency and available plug-in hybrid setup, the 2024 is the better upgrade path. For price-sensitive buyers, the 2023 remains the more approachable buy.
