CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota Prius
overall

Summary
With 797 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,197.00, 30.0% of 2023 Toyota Priuses for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota Prius 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
85.2% of 2023 Prius models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota Prius stands out first for its styling. After decades of being the frumpy leader of the fuel-efficiency movement, it arrives as one of the better-looking new cars to hit the market recently, and that fresh design gives it a much more appealing presence than the Prius name has traditionally suggested. It also brings a huge jump in power without giving up the fuel-sipping character that made the model famous, which helps it feel more modern and more capable than older Prius models.
That broader appeal is reinforced by impressive standard safety features and a reasonable suite of interior tech and comfort goodies, so the car is not just about efficiency. At the same time, it is not without tradeoffs: the price has risen significantly, the engine can drone loudly when pushed hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased. Even so, the 2023 Toyota Prius remains distinctive because it combines strong fuel economy with a far sleeker look and a more powerful driving experience than the Prius has been known for in the past.

I got my XLE for 1000 under retail price. Right place right time I guess and so far I only have a few miles on it. So not to much to say other than it has remote start that is not listed on the window sticker and all the controls are easy to do. My biggest pet peeve is the antenna does not pick up my stations that my other Prius did in my driveway but they do come in down the road. Love the detail on the body lines that doesn’t look like the old ones. So far fuel mileage is way off on the estimate left for cruising range. Happy with Prius and will continue to buy them. Had the last one for almost 10 years so fingers crossed.

The information on the dash display might take some time to become familiar with. On my test drive I had trouble finding information that I wanted, partly because the graphics seem small compared to in my older Prius.

Is the 2023 Toyota Prius a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota Prius earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
The big story here is the redesign: the Prius moves from efficiency-first styling to a much sleeker, more modern look, and it backs that up with a much stronger powertrain than older versions. It also adds a reasonable mix of interior tech and comfort features, so you are not buying a car that is only about fuel savings.
The trade-offs are real, though. The price has risen significantly, the engine can drone loudly when you push it hard, and interior space and cargo room have decreased.
For you, that means the Prius makes the most sense if you want a hybrid that feels more polished and more capable than the old formula, even if you have to accept a higher entry price.
29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 Prius is presented as a more mature, better-rounded hybrid than earlier versions, with a solid-feeling platform and a powertrain that feels more athletic in everyday driving. The expert review also notes that the car remains comfortable over rough surfaces and that the brakes are only mildly squishy, which points to a generally well-sorted driving experience.
Its powertrain is described as a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery, and the review says it delivers ample acceleration without lag. That kind of straightforward, modern hybrid setup is a good sign for day-to-day dependability.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and the review also highlights that the system can be disabled in the menu if you prefer a more analog feel. On the ownership side, the higher price tag is the main long-term consideration for used buyers, since you are paying more up front even if the car itself feels more substantial than before.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any car you are considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the hybrid system, brakes, tires, and any signs of hard use. Because the cabin and cargo area are smaller than before, it is also worth making sure the car still fits your daily needs.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The LE is the most basic version, while the XLE adds features like larger wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key. The Limited adds the most comfort and convenience equipment, including a JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, and Digital Key.
- Powertrain: You get a new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a more powerful electric motor and lithium-ion battery. Front-wheel-drive models make 194 total horsepower, while all-wheel-drive models make 196 total horsepower.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all trims and includes radar-based adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts is also included, and Advanced Park is available on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The LE and XLE come with an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XLE can be optioned with a 12.3-inch screen, and that larger display is standard on the Limited. All trims also get a 7-inch digital instrument cluster.
- Fuel efficiency: The model is described as fuel-sipping and excellent on efficiency, but no mpg figure is stated in the available data.
Which 2023 Toyota Prius trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota Prius is offered in 3 trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it already gives you the core Prius formula: the new styling, the standard safety suite, the 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the hybrid powertrain. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and do not need extra comfort features.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a lot of everyday convenience without jumping all the way to the top price. You get larger wheels, faux leather seats, a power driver’s seat, wireless smartphone charging, front and rear parking sensors, and a smart key, plus the option to add the larger screen.
- Limited: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale Prius experience. It includes the larger touchscreen and glass roof, plus a JBL sound system, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a power tailgate, and Digital Key.
All trims include Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, so you do not have to move up for the core driver-assistance package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota Prius?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 835 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,091.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota Prius's resale value?
The current average of $28,171 sits slightly above last year's $28,164.
That small increase suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is usually helpful if you plan to sell later. A car that holds close to its prior-year value tends to give you a clearer sense of what it may be worth down the road.
The Prius also benefits from strong demand drivers: it is efficient, distinctive, and well equipped, which helps keep it relevant in the used market. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in good condition, you should have a reasonable path to preserving value.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota Prius safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes radar-based adaptive cruise control that works at any speed, pre-collision braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure alerts with steering assist, lane-tracing assist, and Proactive Driving Assist. The review also notes stability control, traction control, eight airbags, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, and available Advanced Park on the Limited.
The expert review is positive about how Proactive Driving Assist works in practice, saying the intrusion is minimal and that it feels easy to adapt to. That said, there are no crash-test ratings cited for this model year in the available data.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota Prius or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 29.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It brings a sleeker design, more power, and standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $29,802, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $28,171 average.
- It adds more practicality, including room for five and up to 23.8 cubic feet of cargo.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2023 is the smarter buy because it delivers the redesigned look, stronger performance, and standard safety tech at a lower average price. If you are willing to spend more for added practicality and a newer model year, the 2024 is the better alternative.
