Summary

Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still makes sense for specific buyers. It has been 13 years since Toyota last redesigned it, yet it remains a rough-and-tumble vehicle that has aged gracefully in most respects. Toyota has also kept its technology up to minimum standards, which helps the 4Runner feel more current than its age might suggest.
For 2023, the 4Runner gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and it is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition. Those updates add some welcome freshness to a model that otherwise leans heavily on its established formula. It is appealing if you want an SUV that is fun to drive off-road, spacious, and easy to use, but it is less convincing if you care about poor fuel economy, unimpressive safety ratings, or poor on-road handling.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

How much does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $43,402 |
| Year-Round Low | $41,394 |
| Year-Round High | $44,974 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $43,693 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −0.67% |
Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.
There are 3,494 listings available, which suggests you have a decent amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns 4.78/5 from owners and 7/10 from experts. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its reliability, comfort, strong performance, spacious third row, and interior layout. The review summary also points to a solid family-friendly setup, with features and cabin usability coming through as recurring positives.
The trade-offs are clear: fuel efficiency is a common complaint, and some owners note that modifications may be needed for better performance. The expert notes also point to poor on-road handling and a ride that can feel less composed over bumps.
For you, that means the 4Runner makes the most sense if you want a traditional SUV with space, simple controls, and off-road character rather than a polished daily driver. The market still shows 35.2% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback repeatedly emphasizes reliability, and the review summary also points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes reinforce that theme by describing the 4Runner as having a reputation for legendary reliability and durability.
You also get free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a rugged, older SUV can hide wear from hard use, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, brakes, tires, and signs of off-road wear. You should also pay close attention to cabin condition, since this SUV’s value depends heavily on how well it has been maintained and used.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The 40th Anniversary Special Edition is based on the SR5 Premium and adds retro styling touches, bronze accents, and standard 4WD, while the base trims are simpler and less distinctive.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard unless you choose 4WD, and the SUV is rated to tow 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The biggest touchscreen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Amazon Alexa compatibility. Wireless phone integration and over-the-air capability are not stated.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA combined rating is 17 mpg, and the review notes 16.9 mpg in testing.
Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR5: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the 4Runner’s core strengths: rugged construction, standard safety tech, and the V6 powertrain. It is the simplest choice, but it gives up the extra equipment and personality of the higher trims.
- TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a 4Runner with a more road-focused setup than the base model. It adds a suspension tuned to improve on-road athleticism, so it suits you if you spend more time on pavement than trails.
- SR5 Premium: This is the best-value starting point for many shoppers because it builds on the SR5 with more comfort and serves as the basis for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition. If you want a balanced mix of price and equipment, this is the trim to focus on.
- TRD Off-Road: Pick this if off-road use matters most. It adds a suspension that improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars, making it the right fit if you want the most trail-ready setup short of the TRD Pro.
- TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the better choice if you want the off-road hardware of the TRD Off-Road with a more upscale feel. It suits buyers who want capability without giving up as much comfort.
- 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is the style play. It adds retro stripes, bronze wheels and trim, numbered badging, and standard 4WD, but it is limited in paint and interior choices. Buy it if you want a collectible-feeling 4Runner with a strong visual identity.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most comfort-oriented 4Runner. It offers a suspension designed to improve on-road athleticism and can be equipped with full-time 4WD, making it the best fit for buyers who want a more refined daily driver.
- TRD Pro: This is the top choice if you want the most aggressive off-road setup. Its suspension is tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt, so it is the trim to buy if trail performance is your priority.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s-market discount.
- Deal availability: 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,494 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $41,394, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $43,402 sits slightly below last year's $43,693.
That small decline suggests the market has been stable rather than volatile, which is helpful if you plan to sell later. A steady price trend usually means buyers still understand the 4Runner’s appeal, even if the model is aging.
For you, that can translate into more predictable resale behavior than a vehicle with sharper price swings. The 4Runner’s reputation for durability and its loyal following should continue to support demand.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns four-star ratings from NHTSA overall, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
The main caveat is that the 4Runner’s crash-test performance trails newer rivals, and the IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test. If safety is a top priority for you, that is an important weakness to weigh against its strengths.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,353, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $43,402 average.
- It offers rugged off-road ability with straightforward tech.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $47,039, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $43,402 average.
- It emphasizes reliability and durability while keeping the same rugged formula.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and updated standard safety equipment, the 2023 is the most sensible pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path. If you want the newest nearby option and are willing to pay more, the 2024 remains the stronger alternative.
