overall

Summary
With 3,382 currently listed for sale and an average price of $44,528.00, 33.1% of 2023 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
87.0% of 2023 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner stands out as a traditional SUV that still has a clear purpose. It is described as an oldie but a goodie when chosen for specific uses, and its rough-and-tumble character has aged gracefully despite the fact that Toyota last redesigned it 13 years ago. That long-running formula gives it a distinctive appeal for buyers who want a vehicle with a classic SUV feel rather than a more modern crossover approach.
Toyota has also kept the 2023 4Runner relevant with updated equipment and special trims. The model’s technology is said to be kept at minimum standards, and it gains standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. It is also available as a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition, which adds some extra distinction for shoppers who want something less ordinary.
At the same time, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is not trying to hide its compromises. Its strengths include off-road fun, a spacious cabin, and easy-to-use technology, but it also carries unimpressive safety ratings, poor fuel economy, and poor on-road handling. That mix makes it appealing to buyers who value durability and capability more than refinement.

The Toyota 4Runner is just about perfect! The third row is an added bonus when needed. The additional safety features on the 2023 is definitely a plus for a teen driver.

The ORP pkg had all the options I wanted and had low miles as well. Comfort, convenience and even the color I preferred. The engine has a history of reliability and it should hold its value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, and performance, and they also value its traditional SUV feel and the way it holds value over time. The expert review echoes that appeal with a rugged, truck-based character that still feels purposeful and solid.
The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and poor on-road handling. That makes it a better fit if you want a classic SUV experience, off-road capability, and a roomy cabin rather than a polished daily commuter.
With 34.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to reliability, dependability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, with many drivers saying they trust it for the long haul. The expert review also describes it as having a reputation for legendary reliability and durability, with a tough, indestructible feel that suits long-term use.
It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear can matter more than the reputation alone, so condition and maintenance history should carry a lot of weight.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, brakes, tires, and any signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle was driven off pavement. You should also pay close attention to cabin wear, drivetrain behavior, and whether the truck feels as tight and composed as it should for its mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base setup is more stripped-down, while the 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds distinctive appearance touches and standard 4WD.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Fuel economy is 17 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
- Infotainment: The largest touchscreen is 8 inches. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and Wi-Fi hotspot capability are available.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rating is 17 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes that the SUV’s fuel economy is poor.
Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 gives you the core 4Runner experience, but it is the least distinctive choice if you want extra comfort or appearance upgrades.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 Premium is the most balanced pick if you want a better-equipped version without jumping into the pricier specialty trims.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best fit if you want the most road-oriented comfort and a more upscale feel.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro make the most sense if you plan to use the 4Runner’s capability in dirt, mud, or rough terrain.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,399 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.76% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $41,442.66, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $44,460 sits slightly below last year's $45,259.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the current pricing pattern implies there is still demand, but you should not expect a strong appreciation story from this model year alone. Condition, mileage, and trim will matter a lot when it comes time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with three-star ratings for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and rollover resistance. The IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test.
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
The main caveat is that the crash-test results show the 4Runner’s age, especially in frontal protection and rollover resistance. If safety is a top priority, you should weigh those results carefully against the SUV’s strengths elsewhere.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.76% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds standard blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $39,972, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,460 average.
- It emphasizes rugged capability and modern convenience.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $46,667, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,460 average.
- It keeps the same rugged appeal while leaning harder into reliability and durability.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and satisfaction, the 2023 is the primary path to consider. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer model year, the 2024 is the alternative to compare.
