Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

The 2023 SL-Class is aimed at buyers who want a statement-making roadster with premium cabin materials and a powerful engine. The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system is aggravating, and cargo space is limited. Even so, it remains compelling if you value style, performance, and luxury over convenience.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2023 SL-Class is built around a premium, high-tech grand-touring formula, with a cabin that emphasizes quality and modern features. Its powerful V8 setup and all-wheel-drive layout support confident performance, while the car’s everyday behavior is described as comfortable and composed in normal driving.

The performance content also points to a car that can be driven hard without feeling fragile, with strong brakes, substantial grip, and a well-developed chassis. If you buy used, the main long-term ownership risk is that the car’s complex controls and premium systems may be more demanding to live with than a simpler luxury convertible.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SL lineup includes the SL 43, SL 55, and SL 63, all in standard Touring trim, with Performance trim available for the SL 55 and SL 63. The base setup already brings a stylish design, premium interior materials, and a high-end cabin, while the more expensive versions add more capability and equipment.
• Powertrain: The SL 55 uses a hand-built, twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 469 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. It is quick, strong, and tuned for serious performance.
• Safety package: The standard setup includes pop-up roll bars and Pre-Safe Sound, and the available Driver Assistance Package adds 13 systems, including adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, active emergency stop assist, and active braking for intersections, cross-traffic, and sudden congestion situations.
• Infotainment: The cabin uses a 11.9-inch portrait touchscreen with MBUX, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless smartphone charging, and a digital assistant. It also includes a 12.3-inch digital instrument display.
• Fuel efficiency: The SL 55 averages 16 mpg in combined driving and returned 16.6 mpg on the testing loop, while burning premium fuel.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class is offered in 3 trim levels: SL 43, SL 55, SL 63.

Here's the short version:

• SL 43: This is the entry point if you want the SL’s style and presence at the lowest price in the lineup. It is the trim that makes the new SL more accessible, so it makes sense if you care most about the design and badge appeal.
• SL 55: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it brings the core SL experience with serious performance and the strongest balance of capability and price. It adds the hand-built twin-turbo V8 character and the kind of power that makes the car feel special without pushing all the way to the top of the range.
• SL 63: Choose this if you want the most powerful, most expensive version and are willing to pay for the extra performance focus. It suits buyers who want the flagship feel and are less concerned about value.

The Driver Assistance Package is a worthwhile safety option if you want the most complete driver-assistance setup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 308 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.39% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 93.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $86,417, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class's resale value?

The current average of $94,652 sits slightly above last year's $93,356.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. For a future seller, that kind of pricing stability can be helpful because it points to steady buyer interest rather than a sharp drop in demand.

The year-round range also shows that values have room to move depending on condition, mileage, and equipment. If you keep the car clean and well documented, you should be in a better position to protect value when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety setup includes pop-up roll bars and Pre-Safe Sound, which helps protect occupants in a rollover and can reduce the impact of collision noise on hearing. The available Driver Assistance Package adds 13 systems, including adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assist, lane-change assist, active emergency stop assist, and active braking for intersections, cross-traffic, and sudden congestion situations.

One caveat is that the lane-keeping and lane-centering systems can feel less sure of themselves in harsher lighting conditions, so you should test the driver-assistance behavior carefully on a used example.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz SL-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.5% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.39% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year benefits from the added SL 43, which makes the lineup more accessible while still keeping the model’s style and performance focus.

The bottom line: The 2023 is the right pick if you want the newer, more accessible SL lineup and you value the combination of style, performance, and luxury. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby model year may still make sense, but the 2023 stands out for its broader lineup and strong market support.
