How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 11.14% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,243 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for a luxury sedan at this price point.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

You’re looking at a full-size luxury sedan that leans hard into design, refinement, premium materials, and advanced tech. The 2023 model also adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving you a distinctive option if you want high-end comfort with meaningful electric driving capability.

The trade-offs are clear: it is very expensive, and it doesn’t qualify for the federal tax rebate. It also isn’t much more efficient than the non-hybrid powertrain, so the plug-in advantage depends on how consistently you charge it.

With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a refined, well-engineered luxury sedan with a new plug-in hybrid setup for the year and a strong emphasis on comfort and sophistication. The expert evaluation highlights a smooth, well-integrated powertrain, and the car’s electric range and charging flexibility add to its everyday usability when you keep it plugged in.

The performance notes point to seamless transitions between electric and gas power, a nine-speed automatic that generally stays in the background, and a ride that stays composed over rough pavement. The cost-effectiveness notes also mention a four-year/50,000-mile limited warranty and a six-year/60,000-mile limited warranty on the hybrid battery.

For a used buyer, the main long-term ownership risk is that this is a complex, high-end plug-in hybrid, so upkeep and repair exposure can be costly if the car hasn’t been maintained carefully.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on a car this complex and expensive to repair. Focus on how the hybrid system, charging hardware, and luxury electronics are functioning, and make sure the cabin and exterior condition match the asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680 trims. The S 580e tester adds plug-in hybrid hardware and 4Matic all-wheel drive, while the standard S-Class emphasizes calm sophistication, premium materials, and a panoramic sunroof. The base models are less visually aggressive than the tester’s optional black trim and AMG-style exterior pieces.
• Powertrain: The S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 28.6-kWh battery and an electric motor. It delivers 56 miles of all-electric range, 51 MPGe combined, and 510 horsepower with 553 lb-ft of torque. It can also charge at 11 kW at home and supports 60 kW DC fast charging.
• Safety package: The car includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver-assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can maintain distance, stay centered in its lane, and handle lane changes when you signal.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.8-inch OLED center touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented-reality navigation, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and the Burmester sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The S 580e is rated at 51 MPGe combined, and the expert drive returned 53.9 mpg over part of the test. When the battery is depleted, it returns 23 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680.

Here's the short version:

• S 500: This is the entry point if you want the S-Class experience with the core luxury, technology, and refinement that define the model. It’s the most straightforward choice if you want the flagship feel without moving up the price ladder.
• S 580: This is the better pick if you want more power and a richer feature mix while staying within the standard S-Class family. It’s the trim most likely to make sense if you want the strongest balance of performance and luxury.
• Maybach S 580: Choose this if you want the most upscale, chauffeur-style version of the S-Class experience. It’s aimed at buyers who care most about rear-seat comfort and prestige.
• Maybach S 680: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most exclusive and lavish version of the lineup, with the strongest emphasis on luxury and presence.

The safety package is especially comprehensive, with hands-on highway driver-assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist included.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.

• Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,243 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.14% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $77,456, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $77,495 sits slightly below last year's $87,209.

That drop suggests the market has moved in your favor if you’re buying now, but it also means future resale values may stay under pressure if prices continue to normalize. For you as a seller later, the upside is that the S-Class still sits in a high-demand luxury segment with strong brand appeal.

The current trend also shows that buyers are being more selective, which can make condition, mileage, and equipment especially important when it’s time to resell. A well-kept example with desirable options should still stand out, but you should expect depreciation to remain a meaningful factor.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has not yet been rated by NHTSA or IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite is extensive and includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver-assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can keep the car centered, maintain distance, and handle lane changes when you signal.

One thing to keep in mind is that many advanced safety and driver-assist systems are tied to the car’s broader luxury positioning, so you should verify exactly which features are present on the specific used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.14% compared with last year.
• It adds a new plug-in hybrid powertrain with strong electric range and a more modern efficiency angle.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $62,063, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $77,495 average.
• It offers a traditional full-size luxury sedan setup with two gas powertrains and strong refinement.

The bottom line: If you want the newer powertrain, stronger electric-driving capability, and the latest 2023-specific setup, the 2023 is the better fit. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable with the earlier gas-only formula, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
