How much does the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?

Prices have softened 10.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,201 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns an 8.5/10 expert rating.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

You’re looking at a luxury full-size sedan that blends strong performance with impressive technology and premium interior materials. The 2023 update also adds a new powertrain, which gives the car extra appeal if you want a more modern setup in this latest-generation S-Class.

The main trade-offs are that it is very expensive and the plug-in hybrid setup does not qualify for a federal tax rebate. It also delivers convenience and electric driving range more than a dramatic efficiency gain.

With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is presented as a polished, technically advanced luxury sedan, and the expert evaluation emphasizes its strong powertrain and smooth operation. The plug-in hybrid setup transitions cleanly between electric and gas power, and the nine-speed automatic generally works in the background without disrupting the ride.

The performance notes also point to a buttery soft air suspension and seamless hybrid behavior in normal driving, which supports the sense that the car is engineered for refinement rather than drama. On the cost side, the hybrid battery is covered by a six-year/60,000-mile limited warranty, which helps reduce some long-term ownership anxiety.

For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that this is a complex, high-end vehicle with expensive ownership stakes if maintenance or repairs are needed outside warranty coverage.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the car’s equipment matches the listing, especially on a model where options can materially change the experience. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing because this is a complex luxury sedan with advanced electronics, hybrid hardware, and high-end comfort features. Focus on overall condition, charging behavior, and whether the cabin and technology systems operate as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The standard full-size S-Class emphasizes calm sophistication, while the tester adds high-gloss black trim, 20-inch AMG wheels, and AMG-style front and rear bumpers and side skirts. The interior can be specified with eight leather colors and five trim materials, and the panoramic sunroof and soft head rests reinforce the luxury focus.
• Powertrain: The S 580e pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with a 28.6-kWh battery and an electric motor. It offers 56 miles of all-electric range, 51 MPGe combined, and DC fast charging at 60 kW.
• Safety package: The car includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver-assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system uses adaptive cruise control and lane centering, and it can change lanes when you signal.
• Infotainment: You get a 12.8-inch OLED center display, a reconfigurable 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, augmented-reality navigation, wireless charging, USB-C ports, and the standard Burmester sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: The plug-in hybrid is rated at 51 MPGe combined, and the gas engine returns 23 mpg combined when the battery is depleted. The tester also achieved 53.9 mpg during evaluation.

Which 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 4 trim levels: S 500, S 580, Maybach S 580, and Maybach S 680.

Here's the short version:

• S 500: This is the entry point if you want the S-Class experience with the least expensive path into the lineup. It should suit you if you care most about the core luxury-sedan formula and want to avoid paying for the upper-tier Maybach treatment.
• S 580: This is the better choice if you want more power and a more upscale feel without stepping all the way into Maybach territory. It’s the trim to target if you want the strongest balance of prestige and everyday usability.
• Maybach S 580: Choose this if you want the most chauffeur-like luxury and are willing to pay for the extra exclusivity and comfort-focused presentation.
• Maybach S 680: This is the top-end choice for buyers who want the most lavish version of the S-Class and are shopping for maximum prestige rather than value.

The safety content does not identify trim-specific safety-package gaps.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,201 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.98% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $77,810, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?

The current average of $78,507 sits slightly below last year's $88,188.

That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today. If you plan to resell later, the current pricing gives you a lower entry point, but it also means the model has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation. For a future seller, that usually translates to less upside unless the car is especially well equipped and well maintained.

Is the 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?

The 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class has not yet been rated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration or the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The safety suite includes lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, automatic emergency braking, rear cross-traffic alert, hands-on highway driver-assist, Crosswind Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The hands-on highway system can maintain distance, keep the car centered, and even handle lane changes when you signal.

A key strength here is breadth: you’re getting a long list of advanced driver-assistance features, plus systems that help with lane discipline, crosswinds, and speed-limit awareness. The main caveat is that official crash-test results are not yet available.

Should I buy a 2023 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.98% compared with last year.
• Mercedes introduced a new powertrain for 2023, adding a more modern plug-in hybrid option.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $63,211, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $78,507 average.
• It offers a 48-volt mild hybrid setup with strong luxury-sedan credentials.

The bottom line: If you want the newer powertrain and are shopping for the latest version of this generation, the 2023 is the better pick. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable with the older setup, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
