overall

Summary
With 3,985 currently listed for sale and an average price of $25,969.00, 33.2% of 2023 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-5 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 remains an appealing choice in its segment, thanks in large part to its stylish design and fun-to-drive character. It also earns praise for its great safety ratings, which adds to its appeal for buyers who want a compact crossover that feels polished and reassuring on the road.
At the same time, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 has some clear drawbacks. Its back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and its infotainment user interface is widely described as awful. Even so, owners often appreciate its comfort, performance, and features, along with the stylish interior, high-quality finishes, and user-friendly heads-up display. Some drivers also note that fuel economy is a weak point, which may matter more for those who spend a lot of time on the road.

This was the car my daughter wanted, and I can see why. Sharp exterior, especially the black wheels and trim against the blue/gray paint- it really pops! The interior is just as sharp with loads of features that would cost extra in other manufactures. Engine performance is nice, with sport and normal modes to save gas. She is ecstatic about it so that makes me ecstatic. I talked to many Mazda owners and read lots of reports/reviews. So far, the word on the street about their reliability, performance, presentation, costs, etc... is spot on. I bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for myself a few months ago. If you are considering an SUV like that, you should also check out the Mazda models. Highly recommend, and I might have bought a Mazda myself if I had known more about them!!

I had been told to stick to Honda or Toyota for a practical car but I was frustrated having to go higher trims to get my dealbreakers like keyless entry or power seats. I also hadn’t been a fan of SUVs but wanted more cargo space, so I was looking for hatchbacks, but they are so hard to find. Thankfully a friend with this car suggested I try it- I was floored to see how many reasonably priced barely used options I had! And more importantly, the BASE model has everything I could want- keyless entry, power seats, heated seats, a great screen, and so much cargo space. I was comfortable driving this IMMEDIATELY despite never having an SUV. The seats being leather trim with suede centers are truly the best of both worlds. And I could care less than it doesn’t have a touch screen, because the control knob is amazing. I love that the base model has all these perks without a moonroof, which I truly did not want. The only downside I can think of is a less than stellar fuel economy, but I just don’t drive long enough distances for that to be much of a concern for me personally..

Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.86/5 user rating, and our experts give it 7.17/10 overall. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and features, along with the stylish interior, high-quality finishes, and user-friendly heads-up display. The ride quality and handling also come up as positives, which fits a compact crossover that feels polished and engaging. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want something that feels more upscale than many mainstream rivals.
The trade-offs are clear: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment interface is widely criticized. Even so, the CX-5’s appeal is strongest if you value a refined driving experience, upscale presentation, and reassuring safety over maximum space or tech simplicity. Good and great deals account for 30.9% of listings, so there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people tend to trust and enjoy over time, with repeated praise for comfort, performance, and features. That kind of satisfaction usually lines up with a model that feels dependable in everyday use, especially when buyers keep returning to the same strengths year after year.
The expert evaluation also describes the CX-5 as refined and well sorted, with a tight, solid feel on the road and a powertrain that delivers competitive performance. Mazda’s cost-effectiveness notes also reinforce the sense that you’re getting a lot of substance for the money.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with the CX-5’s compromises if they bother you day to day.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a vehicle-specific record. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, cargo area, and infotainment controls, since those are the areas most often called out as weak points. If you’re comparing trims, focus on whether the features you want are standard or reserved for higher versions.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup spans from the 2.5 S to the 2.5 Turbo Signature, and the higher trims add more upscale equipment and features. Base versions are the ones most likely to leave you without the richer cabin touches and convenience upgrades that make the CX-5 feel more premium.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder delivers up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. The standard setup returns 26 mpg in combined driving, and the turbo is rated at 24 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Mazda bundles most of its i-Activsense driver-assistance tech as standard equipment, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature gets extras such as the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Mazda Connected Services. The interface is widely criticized, so make sure you’re comfortable with the control layout before you buy.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 26 mpg combined, and the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Signature.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s style, standard AWD, and the core driving experience at the lowest price. It makes the most sense if you care more about value and the basic Mazda feel than about extra luxury features.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the best-value choice if you want a more complete version of the CX-5 without jumping to turbo pricing. It should suit you if you want a richer feature set and a more upscale daily experience.
- 2.5 Turbo: Choose this if you want the stronger engine and the extra punch that makes the CX-5 especially rewarding to drive. It’s the right pick if performance matters more to you than maximizing fuel economy.
- 2.5 Turbo Signature: This is the most luxurious and best-equipped version, with the most exclusive safety and convenience features. Buy this if you want the most premium CX-5 experience and are willing to pay for it.
The safety package is broadly standard across the lineup, but the most advanced features are reserved for the 2.5 Turbo Signature.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

- Inventory: There are 4,071 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.06% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,851.84, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $25,965 sits slightly below last year's $26,244.
That mild decline suggests the CX-5 has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means the market is not showing strong upward pressure right now, so resale gains may be limited unless your vehicle is especially well kept or well equipped.
Even so, the model’s strong reputation and broad appeal should help it remain desirable. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It earns five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating, and the IIHS gives it a Top Safety Pick rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda’s i-Activsense suite is the core driver-assistance package, and it is broadly standard across the lineup. The system is described as smooth, refined, and accurate, with features such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, lane-departure warning, and automatic collision notification. Higher trims add more advanced equipment, including the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, Traffic Jam Assist, and an Active Driving Display.
One caveat is that some of the most useful convenience and parking aids are limited to the top trim, so you should confirm the exact feature set on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.06% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the CX-5’s polished design, strong safety, and engaging driving character with minimal changes.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,206, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,965 average.
- It delivers a more upscale feel than many mainstream compact SUVs.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $27,035, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,965 average.
- It benefits from continuous refinement and feels better than ever.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and overall appeal, the 2023 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2022 is worth a look because it undercuts the current-year average. If you want the newest nearby version and don’t mind paying more, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
