CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 1,362 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,839.00, 33.8% of 2023 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus GX 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
90.3% of 2023 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus GX stands out as a body-on-frame luxury SUV with a distinctly old-school character. It is aimed at buyers who want towing and off-road ability, but also want to do that in comfort and style. Its V8 engine is a major part of its appeal, giving it a strong personality in a small field of competitors, and its commanding driving position adds to the sense that you are sitting high above the road.
That traditional setup also helps explain both its strengths and its drawbacks. The GX’s off-road capability is one of its clear advantages, and owners often praise its rugged yet refined feel. At the same time, it is held back by poor fuel economy, a cramped third row, and outdated technology, so its appeal is strongest for shoppers who value proven capability and luxury more than modern packaging or efficiency.

Third GX. They are not state of the art in driver technology, the mileage isn’t great, and it’s not going to pin your head to the back of the headrest—BUT, you will only need to get rid of this car when you get sick of it. Bullet proof, comfortable, great build quality, and safe.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the last real V8 GX. Isnt it funny how the experts rate the 2023 at a 6/10 and the real world owners rate it a 4.5 out of 5. Ill take real world owners opinions over so called experts any day The 2024 is delayed, recalled before it is even available and has the same engine as the Tundra, twin turbo garbage.

Is the 2023 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a reliable, proven, and dependable SUV that many shoppers feel comfortable keeping for the long haul. The expert review also reinforces that sense of durability by describing the GX as a traditional, body-on-frame SUV with a long-running mechanical formula.
That said, long-term ownership risk for used buyers is tied more to age and complexity than to outright reputation, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you plan to use the GX for towing or off-road driving. Focus on wear items, signs of hard use, and whether the vehicle’s condition matches its mileage and price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim has a more limited equipment set, while higher trims add more luxury and convenience features. The cabin also shows some plastic-heavy surfaces, so you should judge interior finish carefully against the price.
- Powertrain: The GX uses a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It delivers strong low-end power and a 6,500-pound towing capacity, but fuel economy is a weak point at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined.
- Safety package: The GX includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition.
- Infotainment: The GX has a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The system is improved over the older setup, but it still feels dated and the graphics lag behind newer rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined.
Which 2023 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Lexus GX is offered in 4 trim levels: GX 460, GX 460 Premium, GX 460 Luxury, and GX 460 Black Line.
Here's the short version:
- GX 460: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GX’s core appeal: V8 power, standard four-wheel drive, and the rugged capability that defines the model. It makes the most sense if you want the GX experience without paying for extra luxury features.
- GX 460 Premium: This trim adds more comfort and convenience equipment, making it the best-value choice for many shoppers who want a nicer daily driver without jumping to the top end.
- GX 460 Luxury: This is the most upscale mainstream trim, and it suits you if you want the richest cabin and the most premium feel in the lineup.
- GX 460 Black Line: This limited edition adds distinctive styling and extra equipment, and it is the right pick if you want something more exclusive.
The safety package includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams, but it misses lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Lexus GX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and enough deal activity to make shopping worthwhile.
- Deal availability: 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,362 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,492.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $55,763 sits slightly below last year's $57,719.
That softer pricing suggests the GX has become a bit easier to buy than it was a year ago, which can help you as a shopper today. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained.
Because the GX still has strong owner satisfaction and a loyal audience, demand should remain relatively steady for clean examples. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The GX was not crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, so you should lean more heavily on its standard driver-assistance equipment and overall condition when evaluating safety. Standard features include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams.
It does miss a few newer features, including lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition. The bigger caveat is that the GX’s underlying design dates back many years, so its safety architecture is older than what you’ll find in newer rivals.
Should I buy a 2023 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.2% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the GX’s V8-powered, towing-friendly, off-road-focused character in a familiar package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,256, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $55,763 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road ability ahead of everyday polish.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-year pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2023 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable with the older formula, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
