Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus GX stands out as a body-on-frame luxury SUV with a distinctly old-school character. It is aimed at buyers who want towing and off-road ability, but also want to do that in comfort and style. Its V8 engine is a major part of its appeal, giving it a strong personality in a small field of competitors, and its commanding driving position adds to the sense that you are sitting high above the road.
That traditional setup also helps explain both its strengths and its drawbacks. The GX’s off-road capability is one of its clear advantages, and owners often praise its rugged yet refined feel. At the same time, it is held back by poor fuel economy, a cramped third row, and outdated technology, so its appeal is strongest for shoppers who value proven capability and luxury more than modern packaging or efficiency.

Third GX. They are not state of the art in driver technology, the mileage isn’t great, and it’s not going to pin your head to the back of the headrest—BUT, you will only need to get rid of this car when you get sick of it. Bullet proof, comfortable, great build quality, and safe.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the last real V8 GX. Isnt it funny how the experts rate the 2023 at a 6/10 and the real world owners rate it a 4.5 out of 5. Ill take real world owners opinions over so called experts any day The 2024 is delayed, recalled before it is even available and has the same engine as the Tundra, twin turbo garbage.

How much does the 2023 Lexus GX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $56,029 |
| Year-Round Low | $54,497.14 |
| Year-Round High | $57,851.58 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $57,849 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.15% |
Prices have softened 3.15% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,376 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $54,497.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Lexus GX earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxurious feel, proven reliability, and powerful V8 engine. They also highlight its off-road capability and comfort, which makes it appealing if you want a rugged SUV that still feels refined.
The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and outdated technology show up repeatedly, and the cramped third row limits everyday family usefulness.
That fits the GX’s core mission in the overview: you’re buying it for towing, off-road ability, and a commanding driving position, not for modern packaging or efficiency.
With 30.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, there’s enough market flexibility to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to proven reliability, and it also describes the GX as dependable and a vehicle you can count on over the long term. That matters here because the GX’s appeal is tied to durability as much as luxury.
The expert evaluation reinforces that impression by emphasizing its rugged, traditional construction and its ability to handle towing and off-road use with confidence. Lexus also includes three years of Lexus Enform Remote, which adds a useful ownership perk.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear and outdated hardware can make repairs, updates, and daily livability less appealing over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the GX has been used for towing or off-road driving. Focus on signs of wear in the cabin, suspension, brakes, and underbody, since this model’s appeal often comes from harder use than a typical luxury SUV sees. It’s also worth checking that the technology and driver-assistance features work as expected, since the GX’s age shows up most clearly in those areas.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim includes heated and ventilated front seats as an extra-cost option, headlamp washers, and a tonneau cover, while the Premium trim adds more package choices and the Luxury trim brings more standard equipment and a premium audio system. If you want the best value, the Premium trim is the one to compare most closely against the base model.
- Powertrain: The GX uses a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and standard four-wheel drive. It delivers strong low-end power and a 6,500-pound towing capacity, but fuel economy is modest at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined.
- Safety package: The GX includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition.
- Infotainment: The GX has a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Lexus Remote Touch Interface is still present, and the system also includes three years of Lexus Enform Remote.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 15 mpg city, 19 highway, and 16 combined.
Which 2023 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Lexus GX is offered in 4 trim levels: GX 460, GX 460 Premium, GX 460 Luxury, GX 460 Black Line.
Here's the short version:
- GX 460: This is the entry point, and it gives you the GX’s core V8, 4WD, and rugged character at the lowest price. It makes sense if you want the GX experience without paying for extra luxury packaging.
- GX 460 Premium: This is the best-value trim to cross-shop because it adds more equipment and opens up a broader options list without jumping all the way to Luxury pricing. If you want the sweet spot between cost and comfort, start here.
- GX 460 Luxury: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale version of the GX, including the premium audio setup and the richest feature content. It suits you best if comfort matters more than value.
- GX 460 Black Line: This limited-run version adds distinctive styling and the panoramic multi-terrain monitor as standard equipment. Choose it if you want exclusivity and a more specialized look.
The safety package still leaves out lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition, so even higher trims don’t fully close the gap.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,376 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,497.14, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $56,029 sits slightly below last year's $57,849.
That softer pricing suggests the GX has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. The current market also shows that buyers still value the GX’s rugged identity and V8 character, even as its age limits broader demand.
If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you should be able to preserve more value than a neglected example. The strongest resale prospects will likely belong to cleaner, better-equipped trims with desirable condition and history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has crash tested the 2023 Lexus GX. That means you should lean more heavily on its equipment list and overall condition when evaluating safety.
The GX does include automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition, so the driver-assistance suite is solid but not fully comprehensive.
The bigger caveat is age: this SUV was originally engineered for the 2010 model year, so its underlying structure is older than many rivals. That doesn’t make it unsafe by default, but it does mean you should be especially careful about condition and maintenance history.
Should I buy a 2023 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 30.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the GX’s V8-powered, off-road-focused character in a familiar package.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,459, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $56,029 average.
- It emphasizes rugged off-road ability and proven reliability.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-market availability, owner satisfaction, and the GX’s classic V8 character, the 2023 is the better target. If your priority is saving money and you’re comfortable giving up some of the current-year market advantages, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
