CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Lexus GX

Summary
With 47 currently listed for sale near Las Vegas, NV and an average price of $26,882.00, 21.3% of 2017 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Lexus GX 5 / 5 stars.
70.2% of 2017 GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus GX stands out as a luxury SUV that leans hard into rugged capability without giving up its upscale character. By this point in the second generation, it had already gained a number of useful safety and convenience features, including lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, surround-view cameras, automatic high beams, and a standard power-folding third row. It also received a 2017 Sport Design package that changed up the exterior with a different grille, wheels, and some chrome trim, giving buyers a way to make the GX look a little sharper without changing its basic formula.
What makes the 2017 GX especially distinctive is the way it balances old-school toughness with Lexus refinement. It uses a 4.6-liter V8 rated at 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive, and it still offers crawl control for low-speed off-road driving. The cabin was updated with an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen and NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery, while the available Luxury trim brought features such as a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. At the same time, the GX’s strengths come with tradeoffs: its off-road abilities compromise on-road comfort and handling, and the third row is limited in space. Fuel economy is also modest at an EPA-estimated 15/20 mpg city/highway, so it appeals most to buyers who value durability, luxury, and trail-ready capability over efficiency or sporty road manners.

Smoothest SUV Ive ever driven. Its a bit heavy bc of the v8 and build quality, but doesnt feel as heavy as a bmw, gmc, or ford medium/large suv. Maybe the tightest build Ive ever felt of any vehicle. Everything clicks, opens, or closes exactly how it should. Its like the feeling of haptic feedback on a smart phone. It just feels like the right response. Personally, I prefer body on frame (truck) suvs. It feels better than our mid sized crossover suv. Gas is not the greatest, but its not the worst either (I used to drive big v8 fords and gm trucks). I appreciate the size bc there is minimum body roll and its just spacious enough. Its such a comfortable drive that I actually like getting stuck in traffic, which is also why I would never mod this vehicle and just keep it stock. Its pristine. A lot of people complain about the navigation system bc of the lack of carplay, but I may be one of the few ppl that found carplay annoying. Id rather have this system. This is a premium ride thats well built, dependable, smooth, and so comfortable. Highly recommended.

Love this GX460 model over the LX570, which is an awesome vehicle, for a few reasons. 3rd row seating is better for tucking away. Didnt need the passenger row seating video screens. The 570 feels stout as a tank but the 460 feels like a more manageable vehicle in parking lots. Both are supreme and super quiet however. And the clincher for my choice was the 460 aftermarket kit is a aila le for camping in, as well as the frosting on the dessert is the Mark Levinson sound system on this Luxury model. Engine takes 8 quarts of oil! Bullet proof lubrication. Transmission shifts beautifully. Any money saved on many better mpg vehicles is lost with maintenance and repair costs. Love this vehicle!

It also gets praise for a comfortable and smooth ride and its reliable and robust nature, which matters if you want an SUV that feels substantial and dependable. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a premium SUV that can handle rougher use while still feeling upscale day to day.
With 29.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a meaningful chance to find a competitive offer if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner summary specifically highlights its reliable and robust nature, along with a reputation that feels dependable and suited to buyers who want something they can count on. That kind of feedback is especially relevant for a used SUV, because it suggests the ownership experience has been steady rather than troublesome over time.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about whether the GX can last and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well enough to preserve that reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus GX?
At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from ones with prior damage or repeated claims. After that, prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially on body panels, alignment, suspension behavior, and signs of uneven wear that could point to past repairs. You should also focus on overall condition and maintenance evidence, because a well-kept GX is more likely to deliver the durability and comfort buyers expect.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 468 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,831.37, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $26,494 sits slightly below last year's $27,552.
That kind of price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more selectively now but may also mean future resale gains are limited unless you choose a particularly clean, well-kept example. For a future seller, condition and documentation matter more when the broader market is already softening. A strong maintenance record and clean history can help your GX stand out when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
The 2017 is a smart choice if you want the GX formula at a softer price point and you are willing to be selective about condition and history. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may also want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the newest badge alone.
