Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Hyundai Elantra 4.88 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 Hyundai Elantra stands out because it tries to cover a wide range of buyer needs in one compact sedan. It is described as roomy, safe, efficient, and technologically advanced, and its lineup is broad enough to span basic transportation, a 50-mpg hybrid loaded with features, and a budget-friendly sports sedan. That versatility is a major part of its appeal, especially for shoppers who want a car that can be practical without feeling stripped down.
It also earns attention for its multiple powertrain options, easy-to-use technology, and excellent value for money. Those strengths make it easy to recommend to buyers who care about fuel economy, safety features, and getting a lot for the price. The main drawback noted is its potentially polarizing design, which means the Elantra’s styling may not be for everyone.

This car provides exceptional value and incredible features. I can’t think of anything it is missing. Great gas mileage. I would compare it to a Honda Accord with a lower price and better gas mileage.

Bought new 2023 Elantra SEL with Convenience Package. Serenity white w/ black interior – it was the only one with this trim / color combo w/in 200 miles. Great car… no complaints; mileage/handling/tech features etc superb keeping in mind bang for buck cost vs. features. Have owned several Elantra’s over many years.

Owners consistently praise its fuel economy, safety features, and value for the price, and many also like the stylish design and tech features. The main trade-offs are interior quality and cabin noise, with some owners noting cheap-feeling materials and rattles.
That fits the Elantra’s role as a compact sedan that tries to cover basic transportation, a fuel-efficient hybrid path, and a budget-friendly sporty option in one lineup. With 32.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.88/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with praise centered on fuel economy, safety features, and value. That kind of satisfaction usually matters most when you want a used car you can count on without feeling like you overpaid.
The expert evaluation also supports that impression by describing the car as cost-effective and well-rounded, with ownership perks that include complimentary scheduled maintenance on new models. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about finding one that has been kept in good condition and maintained properly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Hyundai Elantra?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on cabin condition, road noise, and any signs of rattles or wear. It also makes sense to pay close attention to how the tech and driver-assistance features operate, since those are a big part of the Elantra’s appeal.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Elantra SE is the entry point, while the SEL and Limited add more upscale feel and equipment. The SEL Convenience package and N Line also gain the 10.25-inch digital instrumentation panel and 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, so base-trim shoppers should check which features are missing before buying.
- Powertrain: The standard setup uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, paired with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive. The car is described as peppy rather than quick, and the standard setup is tuned more for efficiency and everyday drivability than excitement.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, a safe exit warning system, a driver monitoring system, and a rear-seat reminder system. Higher trims add cyclist detection, intersection turning assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and Highway Driving Assist.
- Infotainment: The available 10.25-inch digital instrumentation and infotainment displays are a major upgrade, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, satellite radio, connected services, dynamic voice recognition, navigation, and wireless smartphone charging. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto require a USB connection, and only Bluetooth works wirelessly.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 33 mpg during evaluation, close to its official 34 mpg rating.
Which 2023 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2023 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, Blue, N Line, N.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value-first starting point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and are comfortable giving up some of the nicer tech and upscale touches found higher up the range.
- SEL: This is the best-value choice for most shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- Limited: This is the right pick if you want the most upscale-feeling standard Elantra, along with the richer cabin presentation and the strongest all-around feature set among the non-performance trims.
- Blue: This is the efficiency-focused hybrid choice, and it makes the most sense if fuel economy is your top priority.
- N Line: This is the sporty middle ground, with the turbocharged character and standard 10.25-inch displays making it the trim for buyers who want more personality without going all the way to the top performance model.
- N: This is the enthusiast pick if you want the most performance-oriented Elantra and the only version with a manual transmission.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the higher trims add more advanced driver-assistance features, so check carefully for feature gaps on lower trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,334 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 83.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,695.36, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $19,381 sits slightly below last year's $19,654.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can work against sellers in the short term. If you own one and plan to sell later, the current trend implies you may need to price competitively to move it quickly.
At the same time, the Elantra’s strong value reputation and high owner satisfaction help support demand. Well-equipped examples with clean history and desirable features should hold up better than bare-bones cars with visible wear.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.88/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Hyundai Elantra safe?
The 2023 Elantra earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star frontal crash protection and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA crash-test categories.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite is extensive and includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, a safe exit warning system, a driver monitoring system, and a rear-seat reminder system. Higher trims add cyclist detection, intersection turning assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, and Highway Driving Assist.
One caveat is that the IIHS did not carry forward the prior model year’s Top Safety Pick rating for this year, so you should pay attention to how the car is equipped and whether the safety features you want are standard on the trim you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 32.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 83.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.39% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.88/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It broadens the Elantra lineup with more tech availability and a strong mix of efficiency, safety, and value.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $17,270, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $19,381 average.
- It offers bargain pricing with strong standard safety and efficiency.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $19,907, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $19,381 average.
- It adds more style and standard equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and market availability, the 2023 is the sweet spot. If your budget is tighter, the 2022 is the value play, while the 2024 makes sense if you want the newer refresh and can pay more.
