What should I look for when buying a used 2023 GMC Sierra 1500?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and verify that the truck’s equipment matches the trim you want. A pre-purchase inspection matters here, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with lots of tech features. Focus on cabin condition, feature operation, and evidence of careful ownership, since the Sierra’s appeal depends heavily on how well its upscale equipment has been maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Pro keeps things simpler with a 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, cloth seats, Bluetooth, and remote keyless entry, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The SLE brings a power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, a larger touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Powertrain: The standard gas turbo-four makes 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, and the available Duramax diesel is described as lively with 305 hp and 495 lb-ft. The lineup also includes 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 options, with the diesel and other engines paired to a 10-speed automatic.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and GM’s Teen Driver system. Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, GM’s Safety Alert seat, and Super Cruise.
• Infotainment: The base Pro uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while other trims get a 13.4-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The updated system also includes Google-connected apps, and all trims but the base Pro get a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel.
• Fuel efficiency: The gas turbo-four returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The Duramax diesel returns 24 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined with RWD, or 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined with 4WD.

Which 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 8 trim levels: Pro, SLE, Elevation, SLT, AT4, AT4X, Denali, and Denali Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Pro: This is the simplest choice if you want the Sierra’s core capability without the more complicated tech-heavy cabin. It keeps the 7-inch touchscreen and basic comfort features, so it suits you best if you value straightforward function over luxury.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a strong mix of comfort and convenience, including heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a larger touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and a digital instrument panel.
• Elevation: This trim builds on the SLE’s equipment and opens up more options and packages, so it makes sense if you want a more personalized truck without jumping straight to the pricier luxury trims.
• SLT: This is the right step up if you want a more premium cabin, thanks to leather upholstery, memory settings, and a power-adjustable front passenger seat.
• AT4: Choose this if you want the off-road-oriented setup, since it adds four-wheel drive, skid plates, a lifted suspension, a two-speed transfer case, and an upgraded air filter.
• AT4X: This is the most trail-focused version, with steel bumpers, an integrated front winch, mud-terrain tires, upgraded dampers, and front-and-rear electronically locking differentials.
• Denali: This is the luxury trim if you want upscale features like ventilated front seats, wireless charging, a Bose premium audio system, and a bed-view camera.
• Denali Ultimate: This is the top choice if you want the most fully equipped Sierra, with massaging front seats, a 12-speaker Bose system, unique interior details, and nearly every feature available.

The safety package starts with standard driver-assistance features, while Super Cruise and the most comprehensive camera and parking aids are reserved for higher trims.

What is the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500's resale value?

The current average of $44,110 sits slightly below last year's $49,085.

That price movement suggests the Sierra has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you shop carefully now, you may have less downside left than a buyer who paid closer to last year’s average. Strong equipment and desirable trims should help the better examples hold attention in the used market.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Higher trims can add blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, a surround-view camera system, GM’s Safety Alert seat, and Super Cruise. The biggest safety caveat is that many of the most advanced driver-assistance features are reserved for higher trims.

Should I buy a 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 32.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.14% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends luxury-leaning comfort with a lively diesel and versatile features.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $40,930, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $44,110 average.
• It brings a major makeover with more upscale design and new high-end trims.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $47,104, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $44,110 average.
• It leans harder into luxury and technology while staying highly versatile.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and feature depth, the 2023 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is saving money, the 2022 is the better value path; if you want the newest take on the formula, the 2024 is the upgrade route.
