Ford has already announced a massive Mustang update coming in 2024, with revised engines, new styling, and a hot new Dark Horse variant. That could make the 2023 model year feel a little like an afterthought. The car rolls into the year unchanged. Ford sells the 2023 Mustang in EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Mach 1 trims. Convertible options are available for all but the Mach 1. A turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine comes in the EcoBoost trims. It produces a respectable 310 horsepower and can be upgraded to 330 horsepower with the available High-Performance package. The GT gets a 5.0-liter V8 with 450 horsepower, and the top Mach 1 offers 470 ponies. A six-speed manual comes standard, and Ford offers a ten-speed automatic, but no matter how the gears are shifted, power hits the rear wheels. Cloth upholstery comes standard, and Ford offers leather in higher trim levels. The latest-generation Mustang debuted years ago as a much more modern replacement for the previous model, and its interior still feels relatively up-to-date today. The gauges and touchscreen are oriented toward the driver for better reach and visibility, and the front buckets are spacious with good padding. The top GT Premium trim is available with several interior color themes to complement its leather upholstery. Buyers can upgrade the Mustang’s cabin with nicer floor mats, leather-wrapped and stitched surfaces, aluminum trim, and memory seats. The car is absolutely a sports car and should not be viewed as a family hauler, unless it’s on weekend drives to the ice cream shop. The Mustang’s back seats, while visible, are nearly nonexistent, and they feel cramped even for kids. The sloped roof cuts into rear head room, and Mustang convertibles can feel like a cave with a dark ceiling in the back seat. An 8-inch touchscreen comes standard and runs Ford Sync 3 software. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, and navigation is an optional upgrade. A B&O sound system with 12 speakers is available, and buyers can add a 12-inch digital gauge cluster to some trims. Ford also offers a heated steering wheel, an active anti-theft system, and upgraded ambient interior lighting. Though it’s a sports car, the Mustang gets a load of advanced safety gear. The list includes automatic high beams, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warnings, forward collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and more. The 2023 Mustang is on sale now. Pricing starts just shy of $30,000 for the base EcoBoost. Stepping up to the GT drives the price tag to nearly $40,000, and stepping all the way up to the Mach 1 brings the price tag to almost $60,000.
