Is the 2023 Ford F-150 a good car?

Yes — the 2023 Ford F-150 earns a 4.9/5 user rating and an 8.0/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.

Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, smooth ride, and modern features like the large touchscreen and advanced safety tech. The truck also stands out for its broad lineup, which gives you options ranging from accessible special editions to an extreme performance flagship. On the downside, the test-drive notes point to poor fuel economy from the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6, poor ride quality in the specific test truck, and some interior materials that feel cheap. If you want a full-size pickup that can cover work duties and family use, the F-150’s mix of capability and features makes it easy to understand why it remains so popular. The owner feedback points to a truck that feels powerful, smooth, and modern, with language that supports confidence in day-to-day use and long-term ownership. The test-drive notes also describe the truck as structurally solid and note that the transmission always picks the right gear at the right time without delay. Ford also includes a complimentary three-month All Access subscription with SiriusXM 360L, which adds some early ownership value. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that higher-mileage trucks can vary a lot by configuration, so condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge alone.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Ford F-150?

Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.

You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has towing, off-road, or heavy-use miles. Focus on wear items that can reveal how the truck was used, including the cabin, suspension, brakes, and bed. If you’re shopping a higher-trim or heavily optioned example, make sure the equipment works as advertised and that the truck’s condition matches its asking price.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans regular, Super Cab, and SuperCrew body styles, with eight core trims ranging from the XL work truck to the Raptor performance truck. The base end of the range is built around utility, while higher trims add more comfort and equipment, so you should compare the feature set carefully if you want the best value.
• Powertrain: Ford offers numerous engine options, including the optional twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 in the test truck. It delivers effortless acceleration through a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the truck can be configured with four-wheel drive and a two-speed transfer case.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 bundles automatic high beams, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic reverse braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, intersection assist, and speed-sign recognition. Some of these features are part of the Assist portion of the package, so check carefully for trim-level differences.
• Infotainment: Sync 4 brings a 12-inch touchscreen, over-the-air software updates, enhanced voice recognition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and SiriusXM 360L. Ford Pass Connect and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot are also standard.
• Fuel efficiency: The test truck was rated at 19 mpg in combined driving by the EPA, and the review notes that it averaged 17 mpg on the test loop.

Which 2023 Ford F-150 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Ford F-150 is offered in 8 trim levels: XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, Platinum, Tremor, Raptor, and Raptor R.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the workhorse choice if you want the lowest entry point and the most straightforward F-150 experience. It makes the most sense if your priority is utility over extras.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the features that make the truck feel modern without pushing you into luxury pricing. It also pairs well with Sync 4 and the broader equipment mix described in the review.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and access to additional comfort and technology upgrades. It’s the trim to consider if you want a nicer daily driver without going all the way to the premium end.
• King Ranch: This is for you if you want a more distinctive, upscale personality and a richer feature set. It suits buyers who want the truck to feel more premium and less purely work-focused.
• Platinum: This is the luxury-leaning choice for shoppers who want a more polished F-150 with a higher-end feel. It’s a good fit if comfort and refinement matter as much as capability.
• Tremor: Pick this if you want a more off-road-oriented setup without jumping to the extreme performance models. It’s the right direction if you want added capability and a tougher character.
• Raptor: This is the performance-focused off-road model for buyers who want the most aggressive capability and attitude in the lineup. It’s the obvious choice if you want the truck’s wild side.
• Raptor R: This is the halo model, with the most extreme performance character in the lineup. It’s for you if you want the top-end version and are willing to pay for it.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is the key safety package to look for, and the test truck’s feature set shows how much it adds.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Ford F-150?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,726 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 90.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $41,019, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Ford F-150's resale value?

The current average of $41,019 sits slightly below last year's $43,344.

That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, which can also mean future sellers may need to price competitively to move a truck quickly. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation pressure later, especially if you choose a desirable trim and keep the truck in clean condition. Strong demand for the F-150 nameplate should still help support used values over time.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.9/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Ford F-150 safe?

The F-150 earns high marks from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and five-star ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), coupled with a four-star rollover resistance rating.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes automatic high-beam headlights, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, automatic reverse braking, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, evasive steering assist, intersection assist, and speed-sign recognition. The test notes also call out the surround-view camera as especially useful when parking. One caveat is that the lane-centering and adaptive cruise systems can be a little aggressive in some situations, so you should test them on your own routes if you plan to rely on them often.

Should I buy a 2023 Ford F-150 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.4% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.36% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.9/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• This year adds the Raptor R and XLT Heritage Edition, expanding both performance and style choices.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $45,104, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $41,019 average.
• It adds an updated BlueCruise system.

The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2023 is the smarter starting point because it combines lower pricing with strong inventory and a broad trim range. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer truck with updated tech, the 2024 is the cleaner upgrade path.
