overall

Summary
With 149 currently listed for sale and an average price of $51,629, 27.5% of 2023 BMW X7 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW X7 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW X7 stands out as a large luxury SUV that pairs strong performance with a calm, refined driving experience. Its powerful engine, comfortable ride, and quiet cabin make it appealing to buyers who want a premium three-row SUV that feels relaxed and substantial on the road.
For 2023, the X7 receives a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. That update gives it a more modern look and newer technology, but the changes are not universally welcome. The new headlights and infotainment system may divide opinion, and the technology can be unintuitive, so the refresh brings both progress and frustration.
Overall, the 2023 BMW X7 is distinctive because it combines traditional luxury-SUV strengths with a bold update that is meant to move it forward. Buyers drawn to comfort, quietness, and strong power will find plenty to like, but those sensitive to design changes or complicated controls may want to spend time with the new interface before deciding.

A lot of pluses for 2023 X7; exterior styling, 40 more hp = 365. However, three interior design changes = no buy from me. I bought a 2022 X7 M50 because it has real climate buttons, real traditional shifter and a dash screen (2 actually) vs the gimmicky oversize screen with dozens of capacitive touch buttons for climate, etc.

Is the 2023 BMW X7 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 BMW X7 earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
The X7 is positioned as a large luxury SUV that emphasizes strong performance, a comfortable ride, and a quiet cabin. For 2023, it also gets a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system, so you’re getting a more modern look and updated tech.
The trade-offs are clear: the new headlights and infotainment system may divide opinion, and the technology can be unintuitive. If you want a premium three-row SUV that feels relaxed and substantial on the road, the X7 fits that brief well, but you should be comfortable with its updated interface and styling direction.
Good and great deals percentage: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The X7’s overall character points toward solid long-term ownership appeal: it’s built as a premium luxury SUV with a quiet cabin, a comfortable ride, and strong power, all of which tend to matter when you’re living with a vehicle every day. The expert evaluation also notes that the powertrain and road manners are composed, which supports confidence in how the vehicle should hold up in regular use.
The performance content describes the base six-cylinder as more than adequate for most drivers, while the V8 is potent and the chassis remains composed and confidence-inspiring. On the ownership side, the cost-effectiveness notes that the six-cylinder is the value leader and returns an estimated 22 mpg combined, which can help reduce running costs if you choose that version.
If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is less about the core mechanical character and more about whether you’re comfortable with the X7’s complex technology and premium ownership costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW X7?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage doesn’t replace a proper records review. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the infotainment system, since the updated interface is one of the model’s most divisive changes. You should also pay close attention to cabin condition and control operation, especially if the vehicle has been heavily optioned.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Design Pure Excellence model uses chrome exterior trim, while the M Sport swaps in a darker finish. The interior also gets a refresh, and the base trim does not include the M60i’s added equipment, so you should compare the visual theme and feature content carefully before deciding.
- Powertrain: The base xDrive40i uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, while the M60i upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a similar 48-volt hybrid setup. The six-cylinder is the value choice, and the V8 is the stronger performance pick.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system uses a curved display setup, but many functions have been moved into the screen menus. The text does not specify a screen size or wireless smartphone integration, so you should focus on whether the interface feels intuitive to you during a test drive.
- Fuel efficiency: The base xDrive40i is estimated at 22 mpg combined, while the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW X7 trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW X7 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, M60i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim because it starts lower and is the value leader in the lineup. You still get the core X7 experience: strong performance, a comfortable ride, a quiet cabin, and the more efficient estimated 22 mpg combined figure.
- M60i: Choose this if you want the stronger V8 powertrain and the added equipment that comes with it, including the surround-view camera system. It’s the more expensive choice, but it delivers the most performance in the lineup.
The safety package starts with a strong standard feature set, and the M60i adds more camera coverage and available driver-assistance upgrades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW X7?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,536 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.38% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $53,024, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW X7's resale value?
The current average of $53,024 sits slightly below last year's $64,179.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may also mean a future seller has less cushion than before. If you buy at the right price now, you’re starting from a more favorable entry point than someone who bought when prices were higher.
For resale, the X7’s premium positioning and strong demand for large luxury SUVs should still support interest over time. The key is to buy a well-kept example, because condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i trim adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, a semi-automated parking function, and highway driving assist.
In testing, the safety features performed as they should, with no annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses. The highway driving assist feature is especially useful on longer trips because it can significantly reduce driver fatigue.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW X7 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 38.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 17.38% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model brings a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed X7 and can live with the updated styling and more complicated tech, the 2023 is the right year to target. If you’re especially sensitive to interface complexity or want to maximize value, you should shop carefully and compare condition, equipment, and price against other nearby model years before deciding.
