CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 4,745 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,652.00, 35.5% of 2022 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.57 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
85.6% of 2022 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a light refresh of Volkswagen’s best-selling model, paired with new safety technology. It is also described as Volkswagen’s most popular model, and the updated version keeps the same basic formula rather than trying to reinvent it. That approach helps explain its appeal: the Tiguan is presented as a compact SUV that has grown into one of the biggest of the traditional small SUVs, giving buyers a more substantial feel than many rivals in the segment.
What makes this version especially attractive is its balance of value, style, and standard safety equipment. The test-drive data calls out standard advanced safety features, excellent value for money, and stylish design as strengths. At the same time, it is not positioned as a performance leader; unimpressive performance and handling are listed as a drawback. Even so, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan comes across as a practical choice for shoppers who want a well-equipped compact SUV with a polished look and a strong emphasis on safety.

Great value, needs more customization through infotainment system( but do not spend 3-5k more for interior lights; R-line & SEL offer very little for the price increase) but overall great ride, very smooth and quick performance. Very large market for upgrade 10/10 would buy again

There are 4,865 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $20,777.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.57/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its technology, safety features, comfort, and user-friendly interface, and they also like how it handles different driving conditions. The expert review backs up the appeal with strong value, stylish design, and a practical, roomy feel for a compact SUV that has grown larger than many rivals.
The trade-offs are clear: performance and handling are not the Tiguan’s strongest traits, and the infotainment system can be frustrating in some situations. Even so, if you want a well-equipped compact SUV that emphasizes safety and everyday usefulness, the Tiguan fits that brief well.
With 31.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.57/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience, with owners highlighting the Tiguan’s comfort, technology, and confidence in varied driving conditions. The expert review also supports that impression by describing the SUV as a practical, well-rounded choice that keeps its formula intact rather than chasing gimmicks.
Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage adds two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the vehicle’s condition and service history match its strong reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible wear. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and how well the vehicle has been maintained, since those are the areas that most affect day-to-day ownership satisfaction.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The base S is the most stripped-down version, while the upper trims add more upscale styling and equipment such as a richer cabin, ambient lighting, and more advanced tech.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard on the Tiguan S, and IQ Drive adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the SUV and bring it to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive. Some features are easier to use than others because of the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls.
- Infotainment: The base Tiguan S uses MIB2 with a 6.5-inch touchscreen. Most versions get MIB3 with an 8-inch touchscreen, standard Car-Net connected services, standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring, and SiriusXM 360L. The SEL R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display and a redesigned navigation system.
- Fuel efficiency: The 4Motion setup is described as helping save fuel by decoupling the rear axle when AWD is not needed, and the R-Line with 4Motion is said to get no better than 24 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Tiguan experience with standard safety tech, heated front seats, push-button start, and the basic infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model, but it is also the most limited on convenience and tech.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds remote engine start and builds on the standard equipment without jumping all the way to the more style-focused versions. If you want a balanced mix of features and price, this is the trim to target first.
- SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want the sportier blacked-out appearance and a more distinctive look without going all the way to the top trim. It is the style play in the lineup.
- SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale version, with perforated and piped leather upholstery, touch-sensing controls, ambient lighting, the 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro, and the premium Fender audio system. It suits you best if you want the most polished Tiguan experience and are willing to pay for it.
Safety equipment starts with Front Assist and Side Assist on the S, while Travel Assist and Emergency Assist are part of the broader IQ Drive suite.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market.
- Deal availability: 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,865 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.29% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,777.39, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $20,770 sits slightly below last year's $23,153.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited if the market stays soft. If you plan to sell later, the current discount can work in your favor as long as you buy carefully and avoid overpaying now. Strong condition and a clean history will matter even more when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.57/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The 2021 Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, is standard on the Tiguan S. Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is also standard, and IQ Drive adds Travel Assist plus Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the SUV and bring it to a stop if the driver is unresponsive.
One caveat is that the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls can make Travel Assist harder to engage than it should be, so you should confirm it is active before relying on it.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.29% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.57/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds new safety technology and keeps the Tiguan’s updated styling and value-focused formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,562, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $20,770 average.
- It emphasizes space, practicality, and easy-to-use technology.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $23,061, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $20,770 average.
- It adds a more upscale feel, stronger driving enjoyment, and a third-row seat.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2022 if you want the refreshed styling, added safety tech, and a market that is currently leaning in your favor. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want a more upscale and roomier Tiguan, the 2023 is the stronger upgrade path.
