CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Taos
overall

Summary
With 2,776 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,633, 33.8% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
89.5% of 2022 Taos models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a small crossover that lands between the usual size categories, being bigger than most small SUVs but smaller than most compact SUVs. That positioning gives it a practical appeal for buyers who want more space and utility without moving up to a larger vehicle, and Volkswagen also emphasizes that the Taos brings more space, comfort, and utility than the competition. It is also presented as an affordable option in a crowded market where shoppers are increasingly looking for crossovers.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient, offers plenty of cargo space, and includes affordable advanced safety features. Those qualities make it easy to see why it would attract buyers who value everyday usefulness and running costs. The tradeoffs are just as clear, though, with an irritating transmission and unintuitive technology standing out as the main drawbacks.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Volkswagen Taos earns 4.38/5 from owners and 7/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance. The review summary also points to quality and handling that can feel more upscale than you might expect in this class.
The trade-offs are the underwhelming power some drivers mention and the noisy tires, along with a few missing convenience features. That lines up with the overview: you get a practical, affordable crossover with useful space and value, but not the most polished drivetrain or tech experience.
With 32.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a strong-value example.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling package overall, with many drivers highlighting the Taos as a vehicle they enjoy living with day to day. The same feedback also emphasizes roomy comfort and strong fuel economy, both of which usually matter in long-term ownership.
Volkswagen also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. The expert evaluation adds that the Taos is otherwise a strong consideration if Volkswagen can solve the turbo lag and transmission issues.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the drivetrain and tech quirks may be more annoying than costly, but they still deserve a careful test drive.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping outside the cleanest listings. Focus on how the transmission behaves at low speeds, whether the infotainment system responds the way you want, and whether the cabin shows signs of heavy wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, and SEL trims separate the Taos by equipment and finish. The base S uses a smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen and fewer convenience features, while the SE and SEL move to an 8-inch display and a more upscale cabin. The SEL adds the most premium feel, including two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching and stitched dashboard trim.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion all-wheel-drive versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission that can feel harsher and less predictable.
- Safety package: IQ Drive brings forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On the S, it is an option package; on the SE, some features are standard and the package adds the rest; on the SEL, it is standard.
- Infotainment: The S gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while the SE and SEL use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with SE trim, and the SEL adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Taos is described as fuel-efficient, and the 4Motion test vehicle returned 28 mpg in combined driving, with 27.1 mpg observed during testing.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the Taos’ core space, efficiency, and safety foundation at the lowest entry point. You give up the larger screen and the more polished tech experience, but you still get the practical crossover formula that makes the Taos appealing.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, SiriusXM with 360L, and voice control. It also gets more of the safety tech standard, which makes it the sweet spot for everyday use.
- SEL: Choose this if you want the most upscale Taos, with navigation, BeatsAudio, rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, rear parking sensors with automatic braking, and a more premium cabin. It is the right pick if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it.
The SEL also carries the fullest safety package, while the S relies more on the optional IQ Drive package for its advanced driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,778 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,683.21, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $18,673 sits slightly below last year's $20,804.
That price drop suggests the Taos has become more buyer-friendly in the used market, which can make it easier to move later if you buy at the right price. A lower entry cost can also help protect your ownership math if you plan to keep the vehicle for several years.
The Taos still has appeal because it offers space, efficiency, and useful safety tech in a compact footprint. If demand stays tied to those strengths, well-kept examples should remain easier to sell than less practical alternatives.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen makes IQ Drive standard or available across the lineup, and the system includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On the SEL, all of this comes standard, along with rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
One caveat is that the S trim requires the IQ Drive package to get the full suite, while the SE gets only part of it standard and the rest through the package. The Taos was also new enough at the time of review that crash-test results were not yet available.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It arrives as Volkswagen’s new, affordable crossover with roomy packaging, strong fuel economy, and advanced safety tech.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,173, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,673 average.
- It adds more standard safety features and equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because pricing has softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for added standard equipment, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path; otherwise, the 2022 gives you the core Taos strengths at a lower cost.
