Is the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon earns an 8/10 expert rating, and the model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.

It stands out as a rare, distinctive family car with eye-catching design, surprising interior room, and useful cargo space. It also brings newfound performance capability, so you get a car that feels more expressive than a typical family sedan while still working well for everyday use and even as an alternative to a midsize SUV.

The trade-offs are real: the transmission is quirky, voice recognition is mediocre, and the Carefree Coverage plan could be better.

With 35.4% of listings priced as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is presented as a well-rounded, practical car with strong everyday usability, and its performance setup is described as capable and entertaining. The turbocharged engine and dual-clutch transmission give it a more engaging character, while the standard Auto Hold system helps with stop-and-go driving and hill starts.

Volkswagen’s Carefree Coverage plan includes scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles, plus three years of roadside assistance and a four-year or 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty.

For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the quirky transmission and middling voice-recognition setup may be annoyances you live with over time.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Arteon?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the report carefully, then prioritize a thorough inspection of the transmission behavior, infotainment operation, and overall interior and exterior condition. Because this car’s appeal depends heavily on how well it balances style, tech, and drivability, you’ll want to make sure the example you’re considering feels as polished as it should.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE R-Line comes only with front-wheel drive, while the SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line add standard 4Motion all-wheel drive and the more advanced safety and lighting setup. The base trim also misses the adaptive LED headlights with Light Assist automatic high-beam operation that help the higher trims earn the top safety designation.
• Powertrain: You get a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. It is quick and engaging, but the transmission can feel delayed or uneven at times.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic post-collision braking. The SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line add Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist.
• Infotainment: The cabin includes Volkswagen Digital Cockpit Pro with a 10-inch display, plus an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Car-Net connected services, SiriusXM 360L, and navigation. Natural voice recognition is limited unless you add the relevant connected services.
• Fuel efficiency: The 4Motion model is rated at 25 mpg combined, and testing returned 24.5 mpg.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE R-Line, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• SE R-Line: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s style, standard safety equipment, and front-wheel drive. It makes sense if you want the least expensive way into the model, but you give up the all-wheel-drive setup and the more advanced safety and lighting features found higher up.
• SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds standard 4Motion all-wheel drive and the upgraded safety package, including Lane Assist, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. It also gets the adaptive LED headlights with Light Assist that help the car earn its top safety recognition.
• SEL Premium R-Line: Choose this if you want the most fully equipped Arteon, including the optional Harman Kardon premium audio system and Parking Steering Assistant. It is the right pick if you care most about convenience and premium features rather than value.

The SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line are the trims that qualify for the Top Safety Pick designation thanks to their adaptive LED headlights.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• It adds a stronger turbocharged engine and more engaging driving character.

Consider the 2021 if:

• It emphasizes upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.

Consider the 2023 if:

• It adds roomy seating for five, available all-wheel drive, and a more SUV-like practical appeal.

The bottom line: The 2022 is the best pick if you want the Arteon’s strongest mix of performance, style, and safety features. If you’re shopping primarily on price, the 2021 can still appeal for its upscale presentation, while the 2023 is worth a look if you want the same basic formula with a more SUV-like pitch.
