CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen Arteon
overall

Summary
With 113 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,162, 33.6% of 2021 Volkswagen Arteons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon stands out as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan, and it leans into that role with a refined look and a strong emphasis on technology. For 2021, it arrives with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, giving it a more polished and upscale feel than its mainstream badge might suggest. It is also described as a showcase for the brand’s capabilities and technologies, which helps explain why it wears such a distinctive halo.
What makes the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon appealing is the way it can be equipped to near-luxury levels while still keeping pricing below $50,000. Its stylish design and premium interior materials are clear strengths, and it also offers plenty of cargo space. The tradeoffs are worth noting, though: it is called out for poor value for money and poor fuel economy, so buyers are getting style, space, and sophistication more than efficiency or bargain pricing.

All the driver assistance features you would expect for a never vehicle are in this car minus a front facing camera. The digital dash is a great feature and the auto folding headlights should be on every car. The 268 hp engine is quiet and quick. Apparently subsequent years have a 300 hp engine but mine is fine, no complaints. Trunk is roomy as its a hatchback.

How much does the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,052 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,002 |
| Year-Round High | $23,913 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,909 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.95% |
Prices have softened 11.95% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 112 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon a good car?
Yes — the 5/5 user rating and 8/10 expert rating point to a strong overall showing. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
The 2021 Arteon leans into its flagship role with upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance, and it can be equipped to near-luxury levels while staying below $50,000. Its stylish design, premium interior materials, and cargo space are clear strengths.
The trade-offs are that it is called out for poor value for money and poor fuel economy, so you are paying more for style, space, and sophistication than for efficiency or bargain pricing. If you want a distinctive sedan with upscale presentation and a technology-forward cabin, it fits that brief well.
32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Arteon is presented as Volkswagen’s flagship sedan and a showcase for the brand’s capabilities and technologies, which supports the impression of a well-developed product. Its expert rating of 8/10 also suggests a strong all-around package, and the powertrain is described as up to the task of moving the car despite its size and weight.
The performance notes also say most drivers will be satisfied, and the car’s comfort-focused chassis tuning should help it feel composed over time. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that its premium positioning may not fully protect you from higher running costs and weaker value retention.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title does not replace a thorough inspection. Pay close attention to the condition of the interior electronics, driver-assistance features, and any signs that the car has been used heavily. Since the Arteon is positioned as a near-luxury sedan, you will want to make sure the equipment level matches the trim you are considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, while the higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. If you want the best value, the midlevel trim is the one to focus on because it adds more of the desirable features without jumping all the way to the top price.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four gasoline engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive are both offered, and the car is tuned more for comfort and adaptability than hard-edged acceleration.

Which 2021 Volkswagen Arteon trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen Arteon is offered in 3 trim levels: SE, SEL R-Line, and SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Arteon’s core appeal at the lowest price. You still get the standard tech and safety features, so it makes sense if you want the design and cabin quality without stretching for extras.
- SEL R-Line: This is the best-value trim if you want a more complete experience. It adds more equipment and is the first trim to unlock the available driver-assistance suite, making it the sweet spot for shoppers who want a richer feature set without going all the way to the top.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the most fully equipped version, with the most comfort and convenience content. It is the right pick if you want the most upscale Arteon experience and do not mind paying for it.
The SEL R-Line and SEL Premium R-Line include the expanded safety package, while the base SE does not get that full set of available driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen Arteon?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with some room to find a good deal if you shop patiently.
- Deal availability: 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 112 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,002, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon's resale value?
The current average of $21,052 sits slightly below last year's $23,909.
That price drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you are thinking about future resale. If you buy now, you are entering at a lower baseline than last year, which can reduce the amount of depreciation left to absorb.
For a future seller, the key takeaway is that this model year has already softened meaningfully, so holding value will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim. Well-kept examples with desirable equipment should be easier to move than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen Arteon safe?
The 2021 Arteon was recently awarded a Top Safety Pick+ rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Higher trims add more advanced assistance features, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-keep assist, park distance control with front and rear sensors, high beam control, travel assist, emergency assist, and dynamic road-sign display. The SEL Premium R-Line adds park assist, rear park distance control, and an overhead view camera.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen Arteon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 32.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.95% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model brings upgraded styling, interior finishes, connectivity, and driver assistance.
Consider the 2022 if:
- It adds more expressive design, stronger performance, and more interior room and cargo space.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2021 is the smarter path because pricing has softened and there is still a decent amount of inventory to shop. If you are willing to spend more for a newer version with a broader appeal and stronger performance character, the 2022 is worth a look.
