Summary
With 6,487 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,583.00, 32.3% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers despite showing its age. It offers modern tech and safety features, but its biggest appeal remains its big off-road ability. That combination makes it especially attractive to shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup and still plan to use it for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
It also has a few practical strengths that help explain its staying power. The Tacoma offers easy-to-use technology and a manual transmission, and its bed is useful for hauling supplies. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the base engine is underwhelming, the back seat is cramped, and the ride quality is poor.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns 4.36/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capabilities. They also highlight its good resale value and strong performance in rough terrain.
The trade-offs are familiar: some owners point to lacking technology, underpowered engines, and cramped seating. That lines up with the overview, which frames this truck as a rugged, versatile choice for daily driving and outdoor use rather than a polished all-rounder.
Only 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards careful comparison shopping.

Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Reviews also emphasize reliability, durability, and a trouble-free ownership experience, especially for buyers who want something they can count on over time.
The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing the Tacoma as supremely trusty and durable. It also notes that Toyota keeps the truck modern where it can and old-school where it needs to be, which fits its reputation for dependable long-term use.
If you buy used, the main ownership risk is paying for a truck that has been worked hard without getting the maintenance or condition you expect.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a truck with off-road or work use can hide wear that does not show up in photos. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to the suspension, steering feel, cabin condition, and any signs of hard use. If you plan to use it as a daily driver, make sure the ride quality and rear-seat comfort work for you.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, manual seats, air conditioning, and a basic cabin with hard plastics and older switchgear. Higher trims add fog lights, larger wheels, dual-zone climate control, wireless charging, leather upholstery, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, but it is underpowered and does not deliver a meaningful fuel-economy advantage. The optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft, and it is the better choice for most buyers.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim above it uses an 8-inch screen. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, and it is generally easy to use. Wireless device charging is available on some trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The rear-wheel-drive V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. The V6/manual/4WD setup returns 17 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR is the most stripped-down choice, with steel wheels, a smaller touchscreen, manual seats, and fewer comfort features than the higher trims.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, making it the best value for many shoppers.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited brings leather upholstery, navigation, heated front seats, a JBL premium audio system, and a power moonroof for the most comfort-focused setup.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and trail-focused hardware that makes it the right pick if you actually plan to leave pavement.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors remain optional.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,623 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,074.41, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,600 sits slightly below last year's $34,857.
That price movement suggests the Tacoma has softened a bit, which can help you buy more strategically now. For a future seller, the current dip may limit short-term upside, but the truck’s strong reputation and steady demand still support long-term value. If you buy well and keep the truck in good condition, you should have a solid path to resale later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you may want to look for a better-equipped trim if those features matter to you.
The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as very grainy, so you should be extra careful when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong off-road ability with standard Toyota Safety Sense and a user-friendly infotainment setup.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,558, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,600 average.
- It offers broad configuration choices and added special editions.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,813, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,600 average.
- It keeps the Tacoma’s reliability and off-road appeal while adding a more current overall presentation.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and proven Tacoma strengths, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want to pay more for the newer model-year alternative, the 2023 is the next step up.
