Is the 2022 Toyota Sequoia a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Toyota Sequoia earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.3/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Cost effectiveness.

It stands out as a classic body-on-frame, three-row, full-size SUV with a truck-like foundation, and it is aimed at you if you want durability and utility more than modern polish. The Sequoia brings plenty of cargo space and a powerful engine, but it also asks you to accept poor fuel economy, outdated technology, and dated interior styling.

Good and great deals account for 31.8% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Toyota Sequoia reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is built around a familiar body-on-frame layout and a powertrain that our experts describe as having an excellent reputation for durability and reliability. It also leans on Toyota’s reputation for longevity, and the cost-effectiveness notes reinforce that it is meant to be a long-haul family SUV rather than a short-term fashion play. The Sequoia’s truck-based construction and straightforward mechanical setup should appeal if you want a used SUV that prioritizes staying power over complexity.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Sequoia?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 88% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially because this is a large, older-design SUV that may have seen family-duty use. Focus on overall condition, signs of heavy wear, and whether the truck-like hardware has been maintained properly. Pay extra attention to how the interior, electronics, and driveline feel in real-world use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base SR5 is the starting point, while higher trims add more equipment and visual polish. The Nightshade Special Edition is based on the Limited and adds darkened exterior trim and black-painted wheels, which helps it feel more current.
• Powertrain: You get one engine choice: a 5.7-liter i-Force V8 with 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard, four-wheel drive is available, and TRD Pro models come standard with four-wheel drive.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert is standard too, and every Sequoia also gets Toyota’s STAR safety system.
• Infotainment: The Sequoia uses a 7-inch touchscreen, standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, standard WiFi connectivity, and standard SiriusXM satellite radio. The Limited adds navigation and a 12-speaker audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The Sequoia returns 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway with rear-wheel drive, or 13 mpg city and 17 mpg highway with four-wheel drive.

• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more dressed-up look and a step up from the base model without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
• TRD Pro: This is the one to choose if you want the most off-road-oriented version, since it comes standard with four-wheel drive and special suspension tuning.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the volume part of the lineup and adds meaningful comfort and tech upgrades.

Choose the 2022 if:

• 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 88% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It keeps the traditional truck-based layout, strong V8 power, and standard advanced safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• It offers a similarly roomy, truck-like SUV feel with standard V8 power.

Consider the 2023 if:

• It brings a full redesign with more modern technology and a standard hybrid powertrain.

The bottom line: If you want the old-school Sequoia formula, the 2022 is the one to target. If you want the newest tech and a more modern design, the 2023 is the better path, while the 2021 can make sense if you find a better price on a similar setup.
