Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a compact SUV that has grown into a more serious contender without losing its approachable character. It combines a range of efficient powertrains with a roomy, flexible interior and a stylish exterior, giving it the kind of versatility that helps it compete with the best SUVs. Its standard advanced safety features add to its appeal, and its plenty of cargo space makes it especially practical for everyday use.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is not without drawbacks. The manual transmission is not available, the stereo is lacking, and it is described as poor value for money. Even so, its blend of style, utility, and safety makes it a compelling choice for buyers who want a well-rounded compact SUV.

This was a sharp looking car except when I saw it in person! There were 2 large dents on the passenger side of the car along with deep scratches all over the hood! The online pictures do not reflect this at all. We didn’t even ask to look at the inside or test drive it for this reason.

I have just purchased my 4th RAV4 and couldnt be happier. They are the perfect car for me: plenty of inside room, good handling on gravel roads and in snow, and get decent mileage. The overall look of the car has improved since my last one [2015] and I look forward to taking it on some anticipated road trips.

The reason Toyota sells so many of these is that they are a perfect vehicles. We bought the Adventure edition for our 17-year-old daughter. Looks, style, usefulness, practical, you name it. We all love it and any of us are comfortable with it regardless of age group. Great job Toyota.

Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota RAV4 earns 4.44/5 from owners and 8.33/10 from experts. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise its practicality, comfort, and performance, along with its ability to handle different weather conditions. The roomy interior and advanced technology features also come up often as strengths.
On the other hand, the expert review points to a lack of excitement in the driving experience and notes that value for money is poor. That trade-off matters most if you want a compact SUV that feels engaging rather than simply competent.
For you, the RAV4 makes the most sense if you want a versatile compact SUV with broad everyday appeal, strong utility, and a polished safety story. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels practical, comfortable, and dependable over time, with many drivers appreciating its trouble-free everyday use and confidence in different weather conditions. The expert review also describes it as a solid choice for buyers who value long-term dependability and durability.
Toyota’s ownership experience is further supported by the model’s straightforward gasoline powertrain and familiar conventional automatic transmission, which should help keep day-to-day operation predictable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about a known mechanical flaw and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status does not tell you everything about prior use or maintenance. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important if you’re comparing higher-mileage examples or trims with more equipment. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trims are well equipped, but higher grades add more sophisticated tech and more upscale cabin details. The lineup also includes Adventure and TRD Off-Road versions for buyers who want a more specialized look or capability.
- Powertrain: The gasoline model uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions are also part of the broader lineup, with stronger efficiency and more output.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Higher grades add blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, and a six-speaker audio system. XLE models and above upgrade to a 9-inch screen, while Limited models add available premium audio and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD gasoline models return 27-28 mpg city/35 mpg highway/30 mpg combined, while AWD gasoline models are rated at 25-27 mpg city/32-34 mpg highway/28-30 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited, Adventure, and TRD Off-Road.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the most affordable path into the RAV4, and it already gives you the core safety and tech features that make the model easy to live with. It suits you if you want the lowest entry price and don’t need extra comfort or appearance upgrades.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience while staying close to the lower end of the lineup. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to start with.
- XLE Premium: This trim is the better pick if you want a more upscale feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It builds on the XLE with a more polished overall presentation and is a strong choice if comfort matters more than absolute savings.
- Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want the most upscale gas RAV4 experience. It brings the most premium-feeling equipment in the standard lineup and is the right fit if you plan to keep the vehicle for a while and want the richest feature set.
- Adventure: This trim is aimed at buyers who want a more rugged look and AWD-only packaging. It makes sense if you like the tougher styling and want a RAV4 that feels a little more distinctive.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the most specialized gas trim, and it’s the one to choose if you want the most off-road-oriented version in the lineup. It’s best for buyers who want the most adventurous character rather than the lowest running cost.
Higher grades get standard blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, so safety-conscious buyers may want to move up from the base trims.

If you find a listing below $26,249.62, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $28,013 sits slightly below last year's $28,395.
That mild decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to hold the vehicle for several years. For a future seller, the current pricing pattern is not a warning sign so much as a reminder that condition, mileage, and trim will matter a lot at resale.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 safe?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Pick, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded it a five-star rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on all RAV4 models and includes pre-collision system with pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard, along with eight airbags, LATCH lower anchors, tether anchors, and child-guard locks.
Higher grades add blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, and front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is available on upper trims. If you want the fullest safety feature set, you should avoid the very lowest trims and look for one of the better-equipped versions.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It balances efficient powertrains, roomy practicality, and standard safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,023, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,013 average.
- It offers broad trim choice and a more budget-friendly entry point.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $30,336, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,013 average.
- It updates the infotainment system for a more modern feel.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the strongest balance of price, safety, and everyday usefulness. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want a newer-feeling cabin and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is worth a look.
