Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 stands out as a compact SUV that has matured without losing its appeal. It combines a stylish exterior with a roomy, flexible interior, and it offers a range of efficient powertrains. Toyota also equips it with standard advanced safety features, which adds to its everyday appeal for buyers looking for a practical family vehicle.
At the same time, the 2022 Toyota RAV4 is not without compromises. The available manual transmission is not available, the stereo is lacking, and its value for money is poor. Even so, its cargo space and overall versatility help explain why it remains a strong contender in its class.

This was a sharp looking car except when I saw it in person! There were 2 large dents on the passenger side of the car along with deep scratches all over the hood! The online pictures do not reflect this at all. We didn’t even ask to look at the inside or test drive it for this reason.

I have just purchased my 4th RAV4 and couldnt be happier. They are the perfect car for me: plenty of inside room, good handling on gravel roads and in snow, and get decent mileage. The overall look of the car has improved since my last one [2015] and I look forward to taking it on some anticipated road trips.

The reason Toyota sells so many of these is that they are a perfect vehicles. We bought the Adventure edition for our 17-year-old daughter. Looks, style, usefulness, practical, you name it. We all love it and any of us are comfortable with it regardless of age group. Great job Toyota.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $27,801 |
| Year-Round Low | $26,241 |
| Year-Round High | $28,250 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $28,248 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.59% |
Prices have softened 1.59% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,875 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota RAV4 earns a 4.44/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, and Safety.
Owners repeatedly praise its practicality, comfort, and performance, along with its spacious interior and advanced technology features. The review summary also points to strong handling in different weather conditions and a generally dependable ownership experience.
The trade-offs are familiar: the interior can feel basic or cramped to some shoppers, and the price can feel high. The overview also notes that value for money is poor, so you should weigh the RAV4’s strengths against its cost if you’re shopping on a budget.
For buyers who want a practical family SUV with broad everyday appeal, the RAV4 fits that use case well. It combines a roomy, flexible cabin with efficient powertrains and standard safety equipment, which helps explain its popularity.
35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.44/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Review feedback also points to reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership, with many owners saying they can count on it for everyday use.
The expert review reinforces that theme by describing the RAV4 as a vehicle with well-earned long-term dependability and durability. That makes it a reassuring choice if you want something built for steady use over time.
If you’re buying used, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example was maintained and driven.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not guarantee a problem-free individual vehicle. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, and pay close attention to interior wear, infotainment operation, and any signs that the vehicle has been used hard or neglected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, six-speaker audio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, and standard safety tech, while XLE models and above move to a 9-inch screen. Higher grades add more equipment, but the base setup is the most stripped-down.
- Powertrain: The gasoline model uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. FWD is standard, and AWD is available across the lineup.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Higher grades add blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, SiriusXM, Safety Connect, Service Connect, and Wi-Fi Connect. XLE models and above upgrade to a 9-inch touchscreen, while Limited and RAV4 Prime XSE can get an 11-speaker JBL system and navigation.
- Fuel efficiency: FWD models are rated at 27-28 mpg city/35 mpg highway/30 mpg combined, while AWD models return 25-27 mpg city/32-34 mpg highway/28-30 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota RAV4 trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is offered in 6 trim levels: LE, XLE, XLE Premium, Limited, Adventure, TRD Off-Road.
Here's the short version:
- LE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core RAV4 formula at the lowest price. It suits you if you want the basics, standard safety tech, and the most affordable path into the lineup.
- XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more everyday convenience without jumping too far in price. If you want a more rounded ownership experience than the LE, this is the trim to focus on first.
- XLE Premium: This is the step-up choice if you want a more upscale feel and more equipment than the XLE. It makes sense if you plan to keep the vehicle longer and want a nicer cabin without going all the way to the top trims.
- Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want the most polished mainstream RAV4 experience. It brings the upper-end equipment and is the right fit if comfort and tech matter more to you than minimizing purchase price.
- Adventure: This is the gasoline AWD-only trim shown in the expert review, and it leans into a more rugged personality. It suits you if you want the AWD hardware and a more distinctive look.
- TRD Off-Road: This is the most specialized gasoline trim and is aimed at buyers who want the most rugged setup in the lineup. It is the one to choose if you want the most trail-oriented character the gas model offers.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are reserved for higher grades.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota RAV4?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,875 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.59% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,241, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota RAV4's resale value?
The current average of $27,801 sits slightly below last year's $28,248.
That modest decline suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may slightly soften future resale expectations if you plan to sell soon. Even so, the RAV4’s broad appeal and strong demand profile should help it hold value better than many rivals.
If you buy well and keep the vehicle in good condition, the current pricing trend gives you a reasonable entry point. A well-maintained RAV4 should still attract plenty of shoppers when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.44/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota RAV4 safe?
The 2022 Toyota RAV4 is an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Top Safety Pick, and the RAV4 Prime is a Top Safety Pick+.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes pre-collision braking with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, lane-tracing assist, and road sign assist. Toyota’s Star Safety System is also standard, along with eight airbags, LATCH anchors, tether anchors, and child-guard locks.
Higher grades get blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and rear cross-traffic braking, while front and rear parking assist with automatic braking is available on upper trims. The main caveat is that the Prime’s stronger IIHS result is tied to its updated side-impact performance, while the standard RAV4 still lands at Top Safety Pick rather than the higher award.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota RAV4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.59% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.44/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It combines a roomy cabin, efficient powertrains, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $25,097, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,801 average.
- It adds the RAV4 Prime and broad trim/powertrain variety.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $30,330, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $27,801 average.
- It updates the infotainment system while keeping the familiar formula.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and broad appeal, the 2022 is the sensible default. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the value play; if you want the newer infotainment update and don’t mind paying more, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path.
