overall

Summary
With 3,390 currently listed for sale and an average price of $39,956.00, 31.8% of 2022 Toyota 4Runners for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota 4Runner 4.78 / 5 stars.
81.8% of 2022 4Runner models on CarGurus are accident free.
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is known for its rugged off-road capability, spacious interior, and standard advanced safety features, making it a solid choice for adventure seekers.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner remains a standout in the SUV market due to its exceptional off-road capabilities and rugged design, which harkens back to the original SUV concept. Unlike many modern crossovers that prioritize comfort and fuel efficiency, the 4Runner is built for adventure, featuring a robust 4.0-liter V6 engine that delivers 270 horsepower. While some may find its performance sluggish on paved roads, it truly shines off the beaten path, where its suspension and four-wheel-drive capabilities excel. The interior, while spacious and functional, does show its age with a design that hasn't significantly changed since 2009. However, it offers modern infotainment features, including an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, ensuring that drivers stay connected. The 4Runner's blend of reliability, comfort, and off-road prowess makes it appealing to those who value adventure over everyday convenience.

This is the best car ever made in my opinion. It drives well, is tough as nails, and is always ready for any adventure. We take it off-roading and it drives like a dream off-road. It also looks really cool, and I get many compliments when I am out in public. I hope to keep this car for 20-30 years, and with Toyota’s reputation, I think it will make it that long. You honestly cannot go wrong with this car, it’s the best!

The Toyota 4Runner Limited is an awesome vehicle. It has all the safety features you could want. It drives better than any other 4Runner I’ve had. I won’t be driving anything else ever. This is my fourth 4Runner.

This vehicle is fantastic! However, the TRD Pro is not for folks that want a luxurious SUV. This is a rugged SUV. It is spacious and the seats are super comfortable. Its a medium sized SUV that drives like a body on frame truck and can be legit used on trails. Now that it has the blind spot monitor and 360 birds eye view, as well as front and side view cameras, its got it all! Pedal Commander takes care of the sluggishness. ;)

I have not picked up the car yet. however, going by the reliability of our 2004 Tacoma, and other examples I have seen, Toyota name speaks for itself. The only issue they need to fix, is the location of the oil filter, and to make it a spin on filter instead of the canister filter.

How much does the 2022 Toyota 4Runner cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $40,013 |
| Year-Round Low | $38,259.35 |
| Year-Round High | $41,969.15 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $41,968 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.66% |
Prices have softened 4.66% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,340 listings available, which suggests a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $38,259.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Toyota 4Runner earns a 4.78/5 user rating and a 7.00/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, ruggedness, and off-road performance. The spacious interior also comes through as a recurring strength, even if some shoppers feel the feature set is limited for the price.
The trade-offs are clear: the ride can feel rough on pavement, and the fuel economy is a common complaint. That lines up with the 4Runner’s use case as a rugged, adventure-focused SUV rather than a comfort-first daily driver.
With its off-road capability and family-hauling utility, it makes the most sense if you want a traditional SUV that can handle trails and weekend trips. The market still shows 32.5% good or great deals, so you have room to shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner reliable?
Owners rate it 4.78/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as reliable and appreciate its trouble-free, dependable character over time. The 4.0-liter V6 is called reliable in expert testing, and the truck-like setup is presented as a durable choice for buyers who want something they can count on.
Toyota also backs it with a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some peace of mind for used buyers. Even so, you should still budget for age-related wear and inspect carefully, since rugged use can leave a mark on a vehicle like this.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the 4Runner’s off-road mission can mean more wear on suspension, underbody components, and interior surfaces. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR5 includes push-button start, remote keyless entry, a power-sliding rear window, satellite radio, multiple USB ports, a WiFi hotspot, and an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium SR5 adds HD radio, heated front seats, synthetic leather upholstery, and power-adjustable front seats.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. It is reliable and decent off the line, but it feels underwhelming in most other driving situations.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense P includes forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera are extra.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, Bluetooth, satellite radio, and multiple USB ports. You cannot upgrade to a larger screen, but navigation, HD radio, and a 15-speaker JBL premium audio system are available.
- Fuel efficiency: EPA estimates are 16 mpg city, 19 highway, and 17 combined.
Which 2022 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 6 trim levels: SR5, Trail Special Edition, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, TRD Pro, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR5 gives you the essentials, but it leaves out comfort upgrades like heated seats and synthetic leather upholstery unless you move to the Premium SR5 sub-trim.
- Sweet-spot trim: The TRD Off-Road is the most compelling choice if you want real trail hardware, including 4WD, a locking rear differential, skid plates, crawl control, active traction control, and a terrain management system.
- Premium/top trim: The TRD Pro adds enhanced shock absorbers, a 15-speaker JBL stereo, a surround-view camera system, an off-road camera system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and a moonroof.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to watch if you want the 4Runner’s core capability without jumping all the way to the TRD Pro.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, but blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, parking sensors, and the surround-view camera system require a higher trim or extra equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota 4Runner?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,340 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.66% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $38,259.35, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?
The current average of $40,013 sits slightly below last year's $41,968.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also means future resale gains may be more limited than they were when prices were higher. If you buy well today, you may have a better chance of preserving value later because you are starting from a lower entry point.
The 4Runner’s reputation for reliability and rugged utility should continue to support demand among shoppers who want a traditional SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.78/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota 4Runner safe?
It earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and side-impact testing, and three-star ratings in rollover testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense P is standard, and it brings forward automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, and lane-departure warning. That gives you a solid baseline of driver assistance right from the start.
You still have to move up or pay extra for blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors, and a 360-degree surround-view camera system. The 2022 model has not been evaluated by IIHS, so you should lean on the available crash-test data and the equipment list when comparing used examples.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.66% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.78/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the rugged, adventure-ready formula with standard Toyota Safety Sense P and a proven 4.0-liter V6.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $37,481, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $40,013 average.
- It emphasizes reliability and resale value with rugged utility.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $44,632, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $40,013 average.
- It adds a 40th Anniversary Special Edition and standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and the 4Runner’s core ruggedness, the 2022 is the sensible pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 is the cheaper route into the same basic formula. If you want newer features and can stretch your budget, the 2023 is worth a look.
