The Tesla Model X is the electric luxury brand’s flagship crossover, with a sleek shape and distinctive falcon-wing doors. It’s one of the most expensive electric vehicle (EV) crossovers on the market and competes against vehicles like the Jaguar I-Pace, the Audi e-tron, the new BMW iX, and Tesla’s own Model Y. The line between EV crossovers and luxury EV crossovers becomes fuzzier by the day, so competitors like the Ford Mustang Mach-E and the new GT trim of the Kia EV6 may be in the mix as well—it all depends on whether a particular buyer prioritizes efficiency or performance. With the Tesla Model X, neither is sacrificed, though that’s reflected in its well-above-six-figures base price. The Model X carries over generally unchanged for 2022, following some interior updates and trim shuffling last year. In the cabin, you’ll find a landscape-style touchscreen display for infotainment and, really, all controls within the vehicle, as well as a polarizing yoke-style steering wheel. The interior itself is sleek and minimalistic, and it’s not quite as luxurious as one might expect considering the Model X’s hefty price tag. Materials quality is generally sound, though build quality and overall fit and finish can be inconsistent. For 2022, the lineup consists of just two trim levels, the base Model X and the high-performance Plaid. The base model features dual motor all-wheel drive (AWD); the Plaid adds a third motor. The Model X is good for 670 peak hp, 348 miles of range on a full charge, and a 3.8-second sprint to 60 mph. Plaid leverages its extra motor for specs of 1,020 peak hp and a 2.5-second zero-to-60-mph run, but that extra performance sacrifices some efficiency, with range dropping to 333 miles. A torque-vectoring steering system enhances the Plaid’s driving dynamics. Furthermore, Tesla says the Model X can tow up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. The Model X can be configured to seat five, six, or seven passengers in two- or three-row arrangements. If your Model X is equipped with a third row, you’ll find those seats will be cramped and best left for children. However, other Model X configurations are generally comfortable and offer up generous cargo space as well, with a maximum of 91 cubic feet available with all seats folded. Keep in mind that the Plaid model is available only in one seating configuration, with six seats across three rows. Standard features across the lineup include the aforementioned falcon-wing doors with self-closing, a heated steering wheel, heated seats in every row, a panoramic windshield, wireless charging, wiper-blade defrosters, heated washer nozzles, and LED front lighting. There aren’t many available upgrades, though you can spend extra on 22-inch wheels instead of the standard 20-inch wheels. AWD comes standard, as noted, as does an adaptive suspension system. There are no crash test ratings available for the Model X, as it hasn’t been tested by either the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Tesla’s Autopilot system comes standard in both Model X trims. This system bundles together adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and automated lane centering. This is a competitive list of standard safety features, though most rivals in this space offer similar lists of standard tech. Tesla’s optional Full Self-Driving system gives the Model X capability to navigate highway interchanges and ramps, change lanes, parallel and perpendicular park, stop and go based on traffic signals, and be automatically summoned from a parking spot via smartphone.
