Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stands out as a more capable, adventure-focused version of Subaru’s familiar wagon-like SUV formula. Subaru created it to address the calibration challenges that can come with modifying vehicles for off-road use, while still giving owners the improved trail capability they want. That makes it distinctive for buyers who like the Outback’s practical shape but want something better suited to outdoor travel.
It also brings a new Wilderness trim, along with spaciousness and standard advanced safety features. Those strengths make it appealing as a versatile daily driver that can also handle rougher conditions, and owner feedback reinforces that appeal by praising its safety features, performance in snowy conditions, and rugged look. At the same time, the design may not be for everyone, and the technology can be unintuitive, which may matter to shoppers who prioritize a simple cabin experience.

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the vehicle history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one that’s been used in harsh weather. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the vehicle’s equipment works as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness trim stands out with 9.5 inches of ground clearance, more aggressive all-terrain tires, revised bumpers, a unique grille, black 17-inch wheels, blacked-out exterior trim with Anodized Copper accents, a matte black hood decal, and a roof rack and rail system rated for a 700-pound static load. Inside, it adds StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, a black headliner, Gunmetal Gray trim, Anodized Copper stitching and accents, brushed aluminum pedals, all-weather floor mats, waterproof rear seatback material, and a waterproof cargo tray.
- Powertrain: Every Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-4 with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It also has a 3,500 lbs towing capacity, revised final-drive ratios, and fuel economy of 24 mpg in combined driving.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
- Infotainment: The Wilderness uses an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, but voice recognition is not especially natural, so the system can take some learning.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the Wilderness should get 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test route returned 21.3 mpg.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 1 trim level: Wilderness.
Here's the short version:
The Wilderness: is the clear choice here because it’s the only trim described in the available data, and it’s the one built for buyers who want the Outback’s practicality with more trail capability. It adds the most distinctive hardware in the lineup, including the lifted stance, all-terrain tires, skid protection, and X-Mode traction features. If you want the most adventure-focused version of this model year, this is the one to target.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage but still need to move quickly on the right listing.
- Deal availability: 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,293 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.97% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,006, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $24,027 sits slightly below last year's $26,108.
That price movement suggests the market has cooled, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also temper future resale gains if prices stay soft. For a future seller, the key advantage is that the Outback still has broad appeal thanks to its practicality, safety reputation, and all-weather usefulness.
If demand remains steady for well-kept examples, especially those with strong equipment and clean history, resale should stay reasonably supported. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness does not have published crash-test results in the available data.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also gets steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
One trim-level caveat is that DriverFocus distraction mitigation is not included on the Wilderness. Even so, the available safety tech is a major strength and a central reason this model year stands out.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.97% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The Wilderness trim adds more trail capability while preserving the Outback’s daily-driver usefulness.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,229, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,027 average.
- It emphasizes generous space, reliability, low cost, and safety.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,234, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,027 average.
- It adds fresh styling, updated infotainment, and new safety tech.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive and adventure-ready version of this model year, the 2022 is the one to focus on. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense if you want the newer updates and are willing to pay more.
