CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Outback
overall

Summary
With 3,323 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,993, 33.6% of 2022 Subaru Outbacks for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Outback 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
85.7% of 2022 Outback models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness stands out as a more capable, adventure-focused version of Subaru’s familiar wagon-like SUV formula. Subaru created it to address the calibration challenges that can come with modifying vehicles for off-road use, while still giving owners the improved trail capability they want. That makes it distinctive for buyers who like the Outback’s practical shape but want something better suited to outdoor travel.
It also brings a new Wilderness trim, along with spaciousness and standard advanced safety features. Those strengths make it appealing as a versatile daily driver that can also handle rougher conditions, and owner feedback reinforces that appeal by praising its safety features, performance in snowy conditions, and rugged look. At the same time, the design may not be for everyone, and the technology can be unintuitive, which may matter to shoppers who prioritize a simple cabin experience.

The car has great pick-up speed for highway driving; it has a smooth, comfortable ride! We love the updated screen for the apps as it is much larger and easier to see. There is still the blind-spot assist on the side mirrors, and it is a car that I am now buying for the second time. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!

| Change vs. Last Year | −8.78% |
Prices have softened 8.78% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 3,342 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment. If you find a listing below $24,037.90, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Outback earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its safety features, performance in snowy conditions, and overall value for the price. They also like the driving experience and the rugged look. The main trade-offs are that the base-engine power can feel lacking and the infotainment system can be complicated.
That fits the Outback’s role as a roomy, capability-focused choice for buyers who want confidence in bad weather and a practical daily driver rather than a simple or understated cabin. Good and great deals account for 32.8% of listings, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is seen as a strong value and dependable in tough weather. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that Subaru’s approach is built around what people really need: reliability, low cost, high resale, and safety.
That said, used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how the vehicle has been used, especially if it has seen frequent rough-weather or adventure duty.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear from weather, road use, and any signs of heavy use. Pay close attention to condition, because this model’s appeal often comes from capability-oriented ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Wilderness trim adds a higher ride height, more aggressive all-terrain tires, improved approach and departure angles, a unique grille, black 17-inch wheels, blacked-out exterior trim with Anodized Copper accents, a matte black hood decal, StarTex water-repellant upholstery, heated seats, all-weather floor mats, and waterproof rear seatback and cargo-tray materials. It is the most purpose-built version here, while the standard versions are less rugged.
- Powertrain: The Wilderness uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 260 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. It also has revised final-drive ratios, a 3,500-pound towing capacity, and fuel economy of 24 mpg combined.
- Safety package: EyeSight includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning. DriverFocus is not included on this trim.
- Infotainment: You get an 11.6-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, physical knobs for volume and tuning, physical buttons for temperature and defogger controls, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Voice recognition can be frustrating, so test it before you buy.
Which 2022 Subaru Outback trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Outback is offered in 4 trim levels: Wilderness, Onyx XT, Limited XT, Touring XT.
Here's the short version:
- Wilderness: This is the standout choice if you want the most capability. It adds the lifted stance, all-terrain tires, skid protection, revised traction tuning, and the most rugged hardware in the lineup, making it the best fit for buyers who plan to use the Outback beyond pavement.
- Onyx XT: This trim sits below the Wilderness and is the lower-priced turbo option mentioned in the lineup. It makes sense if you want the turbocharged family without paying for the Wilderness’s extra off-road-focused equipment.
- Limited XT: This trim adds a more upscale direction and sits above the Wilderness in the turbo lineup. It is a better fit if you want a more comfort- and feature-oriented Outback rather than the rugged look and hardware.
- Touring XT: This is the most luxury-leaning choice in the group. It suits you if you want the most premium version of the turbo Outback and care more about refinement than trail-ready upgrades.
The Wilderness trim does not include DriverFocus, which is available only on Limited and Touring trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Outback?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.
- Deal availability: 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,342 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.78% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 85.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,037.90, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Outback's resale value?
The current average of $24,032 sits slightly below last year's $26,346.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. If you plan to resell later, the current discount may limit near-term upside, but it also means you are less likely to overpay today. Strong demand for practical, safety-focused vehicles should still help support interest over time.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Outback safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star overall rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is the core driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, lane-centering assistance, and a driver monitoring system. The Wilderness also adds steering-responsive headlights, blind-spot warning with lane-change assistance, and rear cross-traffic warning.
One caveat is that DriverFocus is not included on the Wilderness trim, and the review notes that modified vehicles can reduce the effectiveness of EyeSight if calibration is affected.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Outback or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.78% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the Wilderness trim for buyers who want more capability from Subaru’s adventure-focused formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,257, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $24,032 average.
- It emphasizes practical space, all-wheel-drive confidence, and a simpler, more traditional ownership experience.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $26,453, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $24,032 average.
- It brings fresh styling, new infotainment and safety tech, and a more accessible Onyx Edition price.
The bottom line: If you want the most capability-focused version of this Outback generation, the 2022 is the one to target. If your priority is lower purchase price, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want newer updates and can spend more, the 2023 is worth a look.
