CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Subaru Ascent
overall
Summary
With 2,469 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,056.00, 36.5% of 2022 Subaru Ascents for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Subaru Ascent 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
87.2% of 2022 Ascent models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Subaru Ascent stands out as Subaru’s three-row SUV for buyers who need more than five-passenger seating capacity. It carries the brand’s familiar appeal for durability, safety, and confident travel in different weather and road conditions, while also serving as the only Subaru built to carry more than five people. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Ascent also brings great safety ratings and strong value for money.
For 2022, Subaru adds a new Onyx Edition to the lineup with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery, giving the Ascent a more distinctive look and a more practical interior treatment. That said, the SUV is not without compromises. Its third row is cramped, its styling is uninspired, and it performs better with lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance turned off.

I absolutely love this car. I previously drove a Crosstrek, which I also loved and hated to part ways with. My growing family left me no choice, but man am I happy with this new ride! I didn’t need all the bells and whistles that the touring offers, but I definitely like them! The ride is smooth, and even though it is a much larger car that my Crosstrek, it doesn’t feel like I’m driving a tank down the road!

Hard to decide between Ascent touring and Volvo XC90….identical and amazing safety features that assist the driver tremendously and both cars will save your life in an accident. For me came down to holding value the Volvo resale valué is terrible with so much money lost. Also cost of service and parts much higher with Volvo. Subaru. Ascent all the safety and luxury and extra room (3rd row seating!!!) but affordability for ownership and purchasing! I bought a 2022 Ascent with just 5000 miles…..saved thousand off off a new car!!

Prices have softened 10.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,521 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $26,021.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Subaru Ascent earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
It stands out as Subaru’s three-row SUV for you if you need more than five-passenger seating, and it leans into the brand’s familiar strengths in durability, safety, and confident travel in different weather and road conditions. Standard all-wheel drive is a major advantage, and the Ascent also brings strong value for money.
The trade-offs are real: the third row is cramped, and the styling is uninspired. It also performs better when lane-keeping and lane-centering assistance are turned off.
With 36.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 Ascent is built around Subaru’s durability-focused reputation, and the expert review reinforces that impression with its emphasis on safety, all-wheel-drive confidence, and practical everyday usefulness. The turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder, CVT, and standard AWD are presented as a cohesive, dependable setup for daily driving and family use.
The cost-effectiveness commentary also points to value-minded ownership, including Subaru’s claim that sticker prices were not raised for the model year. That said, the lane-centering and adaptive cruise behavior can feel unrefined, so long-term ownership satisfaction may depend on whether you’re comfortable leaving some driver-assist features switched off.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re shopping for a higher-mileage family hauler. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and how the driver-assistance systems behave on a test drive. If you plan to use the third row often, make sure it works for your passengers before you commit.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trim gives you the essentials, but Premium adds blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and the Onyx Edition adds blacked-out exterior trim, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, and StarTex synthetic leather. Touring adds extra tech such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.
- Powertrain: Every 2022 Ascent uses a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque, paired with a CVT and standard all-wheel drive. The setup is tuned for brisk acceleration, towing up to 5,000 pounds, and 22 mpg combined on versions with 20-inch wheels.
- Safety package: EyeSight is standard and includes adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. Every Ascent also gets steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist. Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert requires Premium trim or higher.
- Infotainment: Base trim gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a CD player. Premium upgrades to an 8-inch display with available Starlink connected services, including a WiFi hotspot and remote engine starting with climate control pre-conditioning. OTA capability is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: Versions with 20-inch wheels are rated at 22 mpg combined, and testing returned 20.5 mpg on the review loop.
Which 2022 Subaru Ascent trim should I buy?
The 2022 Subaru Ascent is offered in 5 trim levels: Base, Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the entry point if you want the Ascent’s core strengths at the lowest price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, EyeSight, and the basic 6.5-inch infotainment setup, so it covers the essentials well.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim because it adds the 8-inch display, available Starlink connected services, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the most useful upgrade without chasing luxury extras, this is the one to target.
- Onyx Edition: Choose this if you want the midline trim with a more distinctive look and a more practical interior treatment. It adds blacked-out exterior trim and badges, black 20-inch wheels, a unique grille, and water-resistant StarTex upholstery.
- Limited: This trim sits above the Onyx Edition and is part of the broader lineup for shoppers who want a more upscale Ascent without going all the way to Touring.
- Touring: Pick this if you want the most equipment, including the extra tech features reserved for this trim such as a digital rearview mirror and a 180-degree-view front camera.
For safety, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert starts at Premium trim, so that’s the key cutoff to remember.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Subaru Ascent?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,521 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,021.64, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Subaru Ascent's resale value?
The current average of $26,016 sits slightly below last year's $29,104.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim choice rather than broad market momentum alone.
Because the Ascent still has strong safety credentials and broad family appeal, well-kept examples should remain easier to move than less practical three-row SUVs. If you buy carefully now, you give yourself a better chance of preserving value later.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Subaru Ascent safe?
The Ascent gets a "Top Safety Pick+" award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), the highest possible rating in all of the organization’s assessments. Furthermore, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) gives the Ascent five-star crash-test ratings in all evaluations except for rollover resistance, where the Subaru earns a four-star rating.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
EyeSight is standard and includes numerous collision-avoidance and driving aids, including adaptive cruise control with lane-centering technology. Every Ascent also gets steering responsive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist. If you want blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, you need Premium trim or higher.
One caveat is that the camera-based system can struggle in low, direct sunlight, and the adaptive cruise and lane-centering tech can feel unrefined when engaged.
Should I buy a 2022 Subaru Ascent or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 36.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Subaru adds a new Onyx Edition with blacked-out exterior trim and water-resistant upholstery.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,250, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $26,016 average.
- It offers standard all-wheel drive and a spacious, family-friendly cabin.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger market mix of deal availability, accident-free inventory, and the newer Onyx Edition, the 2022 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the smarter price-sensitive alternative, especially if you’re comfortable giving up the newer trim update.
