CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata
overall

Summary
With 306 currently listed for sale and an average price of $28,737.00, 32.7% of 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata 4.8 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.83 / 10.
86.3% of 2022 MX-5 Miata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out as an affordable sports car that feels like a street-legal go-kart. Its appeal starts with its playful character and stylish design, and it is the kind of car that is meant to make driving feel rewarding rather than merely efficient. For buyers who want a small, engaging roadster with strong value, that personality is a major part of the draw.
Mazda also gives the 2022 MX-5 Miata a useful chassis update in the form of Kinematic Posture Control, which is described as addressing the fourth-generation car’s rear-end squirreliness when cornering. The Club trim’s RF version also gains the Brembo BBS Recaro option package as standard equipment, while it remains optional for Club convertibles. Mazda’s focus on manual gearboxes further reinforces the car’s enthusiast-first mission, since the automatic transmission is restricted to the top Grand Touring trim.
That said, the MX-5 Miata still asks buyers to accept some familiar compromises. It is cramped inside, noisy, and does not offer much cargo space. Even so, those limitations are part of the package for shoppers who care more about driving enjoyment than practicality, and the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata remains compelling because it delivers that experience so effectively.

I didn’t think I would like the new ND model but after driving the 2019’s and newer model’s the added horsepower makes it more appealing. I like the retractable hardtop best, for the added security and the new Technology features . Even with the hardtop up there was still quite A bit of road noise on all but the smoothest roads. Still handles like a Miata. The interior is a little tighter, smaller . But the Materials used feel to be of better quality. Zoom zoom.

an amazing car. It drives like a dream. It is not noisy and extreamly comfortable to sit in and drive. It is not my first sports car. Hopefully it will not have mechanical problems as it has many electronic features.

How much does the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,609 |
| Year-Round Low | $25,767.83 |
| Year-Round High | $28,936.34 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,152 |
| Change vs. Last Year | +5.37% |
Prices are up 5.37% year-over-year — a sign of continued demand for this model year.
There are 295 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of shopping room. If you find a listing below $25,767.83, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 4.8/5 user rating, and our experts rate it 6.83/10 overall.
The standout strength is Performance at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, excellent handling, and stylish design. The user feedback also points to comfort improvements and stronger horsepower than earlier models, which helps the car feel more rewarding in everyday use.
The trade-offs are familiar for a small roadster: it is cramped, noisy, and short on cargo space. That fits the car’s use case well if you want a small, engaging sports car that prioritizes driving enjoyment over practicality.
Only 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market still rewards shoppers who move quickly on the right car.
Is the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels fun, dependable, and worth counting on over time. The expert notes also emphasize the Miata’s legendary reliability and its ability to deliver a rewarding driving experience without feeling fragile.
The ownership picture is helped by the car’s simple, enthusiast-focused setup, though you should still expect the usual used-car risks that come with a small sports car. A careful inspection matters most if you want to avoid surprises later.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the car was driven or maintained. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the roof mechanism, cabin condition, and wear items that can be affected by top-down use. Focus especially on signs of noise, rattles, and cosmetic wear, since those are the kinds of issues that can matter most in a used roadster.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The car comes in standard convertible soft top and available retractable fastback body styles, with Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trims. The base model starts at $28,665, while the RF Club is the most expensive version at $39,565. The Club RF adds a more purposeful look and the standard Brembo BBS Recaro package, while the standard convertible is the better pick if you want lower cost and less top-down noise.
- Powertrain: Mazda’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine makes 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, and the redline rises to 7,500 rpm. The car is tuned for a lively, high-revving feel, and Mazda emphasizes manual gearboxes by limiting the automatic transmission to the top Grand Touring trim.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking at lower speeds, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a reversing camera. The Grand Touring trim adds traffic sign recognition.
- Infotainment: You get a 7-inch display, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity with text message delivery and reply, E911 automatic emergency notification, HD Radio, and access to Pandora, Aha, and Stitcher. Club trim adds wireless Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a nine-speaker Bose audio system with front head restraint speakers.
- Fuel efficiency: The car returned 27.5 mpg during testing, and its official EPA fuel economy rating is 29 mpg in combined driving.
Which 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Club, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point if you want the Miata experience at the lowest starting price. It gives you the core roadster formula, standard safety tech, and the lightweight, driver-first character that defines the car.
- Club: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the more desirable enthusiast hardware and a richer feature set without pushing all the way to the top price. It is the trim that best matches the car’s performance focus.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most comfort and convenience features, including the automatic transmission option and the added tech content. It makes the most sense if you care more about daily usability than the purest enthusiast setup.
The safety package is limited to helpful basics, so even higher trims do not turn this into a fully loaded driver-assistance showcase.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but should still move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 295 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.37% year-over-year.
- Clean inventory: 86.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,767.83, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?
The current average of $28,609 sits slightly above last year's $27,152.
That upward move suggests the market still values this model year’s mix of driving enjoyment and enthusiast appeal. For a future seller, that is a helpful sign because stronger demand can support pricing when you decide to trade or list the car. The fact that prices are holding above the prior-year average also suggests buyers continue to see this Miata as a desirable used sports car rather than a bargain-bin option.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata safe?
It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda equips the Miata with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking at lower speeds, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a reversing camera. That is a useful set of standard features for a small sports car, but the overall safety picture is limited by the car’s basic crash-protection setup and the absence of crash-test results from the major agencies.
The expert review also notes that the lane-departure warning system’s rumble feedback is odd, and the blind-spot monitoring alert can linger longer than necessary. Grand Touring adds traffic sign recognition, but that feature is described as unreliable.
Should I buy a 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices are up 5.37% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2022 adds Kinematic Posture Control and makes the RF Club package standard on that trim.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $26,549, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $28,609 average.
- It carries over the Miata formula with few changes.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $29,822, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $28,609 average.
- It keeps the same elemental roadster appeal with a strong focus on driving enjoyment.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2022 if you want the strongest blend of updated driving dynamics, enthusiast appeal, and market support. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play, while the 2023 makes sense only if you are comfortable paying more for a newer model year.
