Is the 2022 Lexus IS a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Lexus IS earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its luxurious feel, quiet ride, and reliable performance, and many also like the powerful V6 engine and all-wheel drive. The expert notes reinforce that it is fun to drive and easy to live with, while the overview frames it as a compact luxury sedan for buyers who want something more engaging than merely polished. The main trade-offs are not much cargo space and a noisy demeanor, along with poor value for money. Is the 2022 Lexus IS reliable?

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a sporty luxury sedan can be more expensive to keep in top shape if prior maintenance was neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Lexus IS?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean title alone does not tell you how the car was driven or maintained. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the brakes, tires, suspension, and interior wear, especially if the car has seen spirited use. Focus on whether the features you want are present on the specific trim, since equipment can vary meaningfully.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Premium trim adds triple-beam headlights, a navigation system, a surround-view monitoring system, a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium sound system, and a power rear window shade. The base setup is already well equipped, but the Premium trim is the one that most clearly layers on luxury and convenience.
• Powertrain: The lineup centers on a rear-wheel-drive 5.0-liter V8 with 472 hp and 395 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a limited-slip differential. Lexus also pairs it with adaptive variable suspension and a rear performance damper for a more controlled ride.
• Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on all 2022 IS models. It includes a wide range of driving-assistance, collision-warning, and collision-prevention technologies, plus adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance. Some functions can be overly aggressive in certain traffic and road situations.
• Infotainment: Standard equipment includes an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Amazon Alexa, and SiriusXM satellite radio. Premium trim adds a 10.3-inch touchscreen, navigation, and the 17-speaker Mark Levinson audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The IS 500 averaged 17.7 mpg during evaluation and fell short of its 20 mpg combined rating.

Which 2022 Lexus IS trim should I buy?

The 2022 Lexus IS is offered in 1 trim level: IS 500 F Sport Performance.

Here's the short version:

The IS 500 F Sport Performance: This is the clear choice if you want the full V8 experience, the strongest performance, and the most distinctive character in the lineup. It brings the 472-hp 5.0-liter V8, rear-wheel drive, standard limited-slip differential, adaptive variable suspension, and the kind of sound and urgency that make this model stand out. The Premium version adds the most desirable convenience and luxury upgrades, including the larger touchscreen, navigation, surround-view camera, and Mark Levinson audio. Safety System+ 2.5 is standard, so you do not need to move up for the core driver-assistance suite.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Lexus IS?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer's market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 888 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 79.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $37,260, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Lexus IS's resale value?

The current average of $37,304 sits slightly below last year's $38,163.

That softer pricing can help you buy more confidently now, but it also means future sellers may face a more competitive market if prices continue to ease. The current range suggests the model is holding value reasonably well, though not strongly enough to ignore condition, mileage, and equipment. If you buy well and keep the car in good shape, you should be better positioned when it is time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Lexus IS safe?

The Lexus IS earns the highest overall rating of “Top Safety Pick+” from IIHS, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives it an overall rating of five-star. It also earns five-star ratings for rollover resistance, but receives a four-star frontal-impact collision rating for the driver and front passenger.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on all 2022 IS models. The suite includes lane-departure warning with subtle steering wheel vibration, adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, collision-warning and collision-prevention technologies, and low-speed automatic braking. The expert notes also point out that some functions can be overly aggressive, especially in tighter curves and heavy city traffic.

Should I buy a 2022 Lexus IS or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 36.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 adds the IS 500 F Sport Performance, bringing a 472-hp V8 and a major performance boost.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $34,517, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $37,304 average.
• It launched the fourth-generation IS with a sharper enthusiast focus and a fresh redesign.

The bottom line: You should choose the 2022 if you want the stronger performance story, the better market data, and the added appeal of the IS 500. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the smarter value play, especially if you can live without the newer year’s performance halo.
