CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 126 currently listed for sale near Rochester, NY and an average price of $18,800.00, 35.7% of 2022 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality. Even with its polarizing exterior design, it exudes quality and provides exceptional value, which gives it a clear identity in a segment where many shoppers are comparing familiar names. It also brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty, all of which strengthen its appeal for buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver.
What makes the 2022 Hyundai Sonata especially distinctive is that it does not rely on one single selling point. Instead, it combines tremendous value with exceptional quality and adds a surprisingly sporty N Line variant for shoppers who want something a little more engaging. Its main drawback is that the design may not appeal to everyone, and all-wheel drive is not available, so buyers who want that feature will need to look elsewhere.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

| Year-Round High | $21,777.09 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $21,778 |

Prices have softened 8.19% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,148 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
If you find a listing below $19,943.56, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.75/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating.
The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
You get a midsize sedan that emphasizes value, quality, and a spacious interior, while still offering a sporty N Line variant if you want a more engaging personality. The trade-offs are a potentially polarizing design and the lack of all-wheel drive.
With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s appeal here starts with its strong value proposition and Hyundai’s extensive warranty coverage, both of which support confidence in ownership. The expert evaluation also points to a quiet cabin and a well-rounded package, which usually matters when you plan to keep a car for years.
The performance notes describe the Sonata as competent, smooth, and serene in everyday driving, which is the kind of behavior that tends to age well for used buyers. Hyundai also includes three years or 36,000 miles of complimentary maintenance, which can help reduce early ownership costs.
For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly and hasn’t accumulated hidden wear despite its strong warranty-backed reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share doesn’t guarantee the individual car you’re considering has a clean past. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition, service history, and whether the equipment on the specific trim matches what you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Base trims are lighter on convenience and tech, while higher trims add more upscale features and a more premium cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder is paired with an eight-speed automatic and is tuned for calm everyday use; the turbocharged 1.6-liter adds more punch, while the N Line’s turbocharged 2.5-liter is the performance standout. All versions are front-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Hyundai’s standard driver-assistance suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base models use an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while higher trims move to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless device charging, and a 12-speaker Bose audio system. OTA capability is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg on the SE to 27 mpg on the N Line, while the SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited return 31 mpg combined. During testing, the Limited averaged 30.7 mpg.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE gives you the essentials, but it skips the more upscale cabin touches and the expanded driver-assistance features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, and more comfort and convenience equipment.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most complete all-around choice if you want the richest feature set, including ventilated front seats, a head-up display, surround-view monitor, and rear parking-collision avoidance.
- Off-road trim: The N Line is the performance-focused choice, but its sport-tuned setup and lower fuel economy make it less ideal if you mainly want a relaxed daily driver.
The SEL also gets the core safety package upgrades that make it the most balanced trim for most used-car shoppers.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,148 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.19% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,943.56, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $19,994 sits slightly below last year's $21,778.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, the softer market means you may need to price competitively to stand out. On the other hand, the model’s strong value story and broad feature set can help support interest when it’s time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five-star ratings for overall crash protection from NHTSA, with four-star ratings for front crash protection and five-star ratings for side crash protection and rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai’s standard safety suite includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
The main caveat is that IIHS has not rated the 2022 Sonata directly, so you’re relying on NHTSA results and the broader Hyundai safety package when evaluating crash protection.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.19% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, a spacious cabin, and a sporty N Line option.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,354, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,994 average.
- It emphasizes performance and practicality in a compelling midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around value proposition, the 2022 is the better target because it pairs a lower market price than last year with strong safety, good equipment, and broad trim choice. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive alternative, especially if you’re comfortable giving up some of the 2022’s market positioning.
