CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Hyundai Sonata
overall

Summary
With 1,963 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,892, 31.6% of 2022 Hyundai Sonatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Hyundai Sonata 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8 / 10.
78.6% of 2022 Sonata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata stands out in the midsize sedan class by leaning hard into value and quality. Even with its polarizing exterior design, it exudes quality and offers exceptional value, which gives it a clear identity in a segment where many shoppers are focused on familiar nameplates. It also brings a quiet cabin, standard advanced safety features, and a great warranty, all of which strengthen its appeal for buyers who want a well-rounded daily driver.
Its strengths are especially important because the Sonata is competing in a crowded field and doing so at a time when interest in midsize sedans has been waning. The car’s surprisingly sporty N Line variant adds another layer of distinction, giving the Sonata a more engaging side without abandoning its practical mission. The main drawbacks are straightforward: the design may not appeal to everyone, and all-wheel drive is not available.

Nice smooth ride, plenty of power under the hood. But missing some comfort features comparing it to the Kia K5. Would still recommend the car though.

We got the Limited, the top trim line of the Sonata. We really like it. It is very comfortable, and all the cameras around the outside give wonderful situational awareness in either driving or parking. The backup camera is great in the daytime but doesnt give nearly as clear a view at night. We preferred the shift lever in our last Sonata, but the buttons are OK. The dashboard displays give a LOT of information, and we love the heads display. We looked at offerings of Honda, Toyota, and Nissan, but none seemed to have the features offered by this car.

The main trade-offs are straightforward: the design may not appeal to you, and all-wheel drive is not available. If you want a well-rounded daily driver with strong value and a sporty option, the Sonata fits that brief well.
31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.75/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The Sonata’s appeal for reliability-minded buyers starts with its strong value, excellent warranty coverage, and quiet, competent driving character. It also brings a serene cabin and a powertrain lineup that is described as adequate and composed, which supports the sense that it is built for steady everyday use.
The ownership picture is helped further by complimentary maintenance for the first three years or 36,000 miles, which lowers early running costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the car was maintained properly, since that matters more than the badge when you’re buying a sedan with this much equipment.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 78% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any Sonata you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the electronics, safety systems, and interior condition, since this car’s value is tied closely to its equipment and how well it has been kept. Focus on trim-specific features too, because the gap between base and higher trims is meaningful.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE gives you the essentials, while higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and visual polish. The Limited trim brings a more upscale feel with leather, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a surround-view monitor.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower, while the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder makes 180 horsepower and 195 pound-feet of torque. The N Line uses a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 290 horsepower, an eight-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, sport suspension, and a tuned exhaust.
- Safety package: Every 2022 Sonata includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
- Infotainment: Base SE versions come with an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, and a rearview camera. SEL Plus, Limited, and both N Line trims upgrade to a 10.25-inch touchscreen with navigation, a 12-speaker Bose audio system, wireless device charging, and dynamic voice recognition.
- Fuel efficiency: Combined fuel economy ranges from 32 mpg for the SE to 27 mpg for the N Line. The SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited all return 31 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Hyundai Sonata trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata is offered in 6 trim levels: SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited, N Line, and N Line Night Edition.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry point and the core Sonata experience. You still get LED lighting, an 8-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, and the standard safety suite.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a power driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, satellite radio, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, Safe Exit Assist, and Blue Link connected services.
- SEL Plus: Choose this if you want a more premium feel without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It adds the panoramic sunroof, 10.25-inch navigation screen, Bose audio, Highway Drive Assist, a 12.3-inch gauge display, wireless charging, and larger wheels.
- Limited: This is the comfort-and-tech upgrade. You get leather seats, ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, head-up display, Remote Smart Parking Assist, rear parking-collision avoidance, and the surround-view monitor.
- N Line: Pick this if you want the sportiest Sonata. It adds the 290-horsepower turbo 2.5-liter engine, sport suspension, wet dual-clutch automatic transmission, tuned exhaust, unique styling, and the same upgraded tech found on the higher trims.
- N Line Night Edition: This is for you if you want the N Line’s performance and a darker appearance package with matte black wheels, red brake calipers, dark chrome badging, and a carbon-fiber-reinforced rear lip spoiler.
The SEL is the trim where the safety and convenience package starts to feel especially complete, while the Limited adds the most advanced parking and visibility aids.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,974 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.62% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 78.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,746, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $19,886 sits slightly below last year's $21,527.
That price movement suggests the Sonata has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it easier to move later if you price it competitively. For a future seller, the current market also shows that well-equipped, value-focused sedans can still attract attention when they’re clean and well maintained.
Because the model has strong owner satisfaction and a clear value proposition, it should remain appealing to shoppers who want a lot of equipment for the money. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Sonata safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Sonata gets five stars overall from NHTSA, with four stars for front crash protection and five stars for both side crash protection and rollover resistance.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Every 2022 Sonata includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, driver-attention warning, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview monitor, and Rear Occupant Alert. SEL adds blind-spot collision-avoidance assist, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-centering assistance, and Safe Exit Assist, while Limited adds a blind-spot view monitor, rear park assist, and surround-view monitor.
One caveat is that the IIHS had not rated the 2022 Sonata for crashworthiness in the provided data, so you should lean on the NHTSA results and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 31.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 78% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.62% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Despite having the onerous task of competing against segment mainstays, the Sonata continues to play to its strengths with tremendous value, exceptional quality, and an outstanding warranty.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,192, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,886 average.
- It emphasizes practical performance and passenger-cargo usefulness in a compelling midsize package.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around buy, the 2022 is the better target because it combines value, safety, and equipment with a softer price trend. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2021 is the better budget path, especially if you find one in good condition with the features you want.
