Why it stands out
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe stands out as a roomy midsize SUV that delivers strong value and a lot of standard appeal. It is especially worth a look if you do not need a third row, since those seats add weight and reduce cargo space. Hyundai also gives this model year a new plug-in hybrid version, while the standard lineup adds a new XRT trim designed to convey an outdoor lifestyle.
That XRT trim brings blacked-out exterior details, unique black alloy wheels, additional lower body cladding, fake front and rear skid plates, nearly useless running boards, and roof-rail crossbars that look like basket handles. Hyundai also expands blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist to the Santa Fe SE trim level later in the year. The Santa Fe’s strengths include impressive technology, great safety ratings, and excellent value for money, though its base engine is underwhelming and fuel economy is poor.

This is very good choice for personal daily commute purposes. Has everything you need. Obviously SantaFe calligraphy has all the features provided by Hyundai, I feel wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto is missing.

Extraordinary value with many standard safety features and a luxurious interior. Ill take this poor mans Genesis anyway, saved a lot of money.

This vehicle has a lot of bang for the buck. It hits well above its class IMO. The comfort and ride quality is very good ... The Limited is as good as many luxury class vehicles including Lexus and M/B that cost 10s of thousands more. Lots of tech that does take some time to learn and get used to but helpful and functional, if you are into that. We were sold on it in about 5 minutes during test drive after dearching for a new ride for 6-8 months. We like it.

How much does the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $21,676 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,676 |
| Year-Round High | $23,818 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,815 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.98% |
Prices have softened 8.98% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,648 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for shoppers comparing prices and equipment.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe a good car?
Yes — with a 4.85/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe looks like a strong all-around pick. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Drivers consistently praise its excellent value, numerous tech features, comfortable ride, spacious interior, and advanced safety features. The expert review also highlights its roomy midsize-SUV packaging and strong standard appeal, especially if you do not need a third row.
The trade-offs are clear: the base engine is underwhelming, and fuel economy is poor. The overview frames it as a practical two-row SUV for shoppers who want space, value, and features without needing extra seating.
Only 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than deeply discounted.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe reliable?
Owners rate it 4.85/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with drivers repeatedly calling out comfort, value, and advanced safety features as reasons they feel good about the vehicle over time. The expert review also emphasizes Hyundai’s value proposition and the Santa Fe’s composed, refined behavior, which supports confidence in day-to-day use.
Hyundai’s complimentary maintenance program and long warranty coverage add another layer of reassurance for used buyers. For long-term ownership, the main risk is that the base engine may feel strained if you regularly want stronger acceleration or frequent highway passing power.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the engine’s responsiveness, cabin condition, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the trim you’re considering. If you plan to keep the SUV for a while, pay close attention to how the powertrain feels under load and whether the technology and safety features operate as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XRT adds blacked-out exterior details, unique black alloy wheels, additional lower body cladding, fake front and rear skid plates, nearly useless running boards, and roof-rail crossbars. It also includes the SEL equipment and that trim’s Convenience Package, but it is not the most upscale-feeling choice.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 191 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque, and it is adequate for normal driving but not quick. Higher trims get a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Hyundai SmartSense includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Highway Driving Assist is not available on the XRT trim level.
- Infotainment: The XRT has a 12.3-inch digital instrumentation panel and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, along with Bluetooth, satellite radio, and Bluelink connected services with a complimentary three-year subscription.
- Fuel efficiency: The test vehicle averaged 22.3 mpg, and the official EPA fuel economy rating is 24 mpg.
Which 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe trim should I buy?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe is offered in 5 trim levels: SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost path into the Santa Fe lineup. The safety equipment expands later in the year, so it is worth checking exactly which features are present on the specific vehicle you’re considering.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim because it builds on the lower trims with more equipment and serves as the foundation for the XRT’s added content. If you want the strongest balance of features and price, this is the one to focus on.
- XRT: This trim is for you if you want the Santa Fe’s value and tech with a more rugged-looking appearance package. It adds the blacked-out styling, unique wheels, and extra exterior cladding, but the visual changes are more cosmetic than functional.
- Limited: This is the better choice if you want the turbocharged engine and a more upscale feel. It is the step up for shoppers who care more about stronger performance and richer equipment than about keeping the price down.
- Calligraphy: This is the top-end choice if you want the most premium version of the Santa Fe. It pairs the stronger turbo powertrain with the most upscale presentation in the lineup.
Safety-wise, Hyundai expands blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Safe Exit Assist to the Santa Fe SE trim level later in the year.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but not so much discounting that every listing is a bargain.
- Deal availability: 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,648 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.98% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,676, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe's resale value?
The current average of $21,676 sits slightly below last year's $23,815.
That price movement suggests the Santa Fe has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand healthy in the near term. For a future seller, the current softness means you may not see the same resale strength you would have a year ago, but the model’s broad appeal still supports marketability. Strong value, safety, and technology tend to keep shoppers interested, especially in a practical two-row SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.85/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe safe?
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and five-star ratings in every National Highway Traffic Safety Administration test except for a four-star rollover resistance score.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Hyundai SmartSense brings forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, lane-centering assist, and adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability. Safe Exit Assist is also standard, and the SUV includes an ultrasonic rear occupant alert system plus Bluelink safety functions such as automatic emergency assistance and alert settings for speed, curfew, and geographic boundaries.
One caveat is that Highway Driving Assist is not available on the XRT trim level. Even so, the tested driver-assistance systems worked cleanly and consistently, which is exactly what you want in a used family SUV.
Should I buy a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.98% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.85/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds a new XRT trim and expands safety availability later in the year.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $19,703, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $21,676 average.
- It brought a major redesign with new styling, technology, and safety upgrades.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $24,793, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $21,676 average.
- It carries over nearly unchanged with minor equipment updates and slightly more base-engine horsepower.
The bottom line: The 2022 is the right pick if you want the best mix of value, safety, and modern tech at a lower price than the 2023. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better bargain; if you want the newest carryover version, the 2023 is the cleaner but pricier alternative.
