How much does the 2022 Ford Explorer cost?

Prices have softened 12.11% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 9,805 listings available, which suggests you should have a healthy number of options to compare.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Ford Explorer earns 4.92/5 from owners and 7.5/10 from our experts.

The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

Owners commonly praise its comfort, performance, and practicality, and they also like the spacious interior and cargo capacity that work well for families. The Explorer’s broad trim spread and multiple powertrain choices also help it fit different needs, from value-focused shopping to more upscale or capability-oriented use.

The trade-offs are that the third row is cramped and the value equation is not especially strong, while some owners want better power and smoother warning-system behavior. For you, that means it makes the most sense if you want a family SUV with strong safety and versatility rather than the sharpest value play in the segment.

Good and great deals account for 35.6% of listings, so there is some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer reliable?

Owners rate it 4.92/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as comfortable, practical, and dependable for family use, with praise centered on its spacious cabin and everyday usability. The expert review also emphasizes that the Explorer feels robust on the road and capable in a variety of driving situations.

Ford’s ownership pitch is less compelling than some rivals because it does not match competitors that include complimentary scheduled maintenance and longer warranty coverage. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is more about maintenance costs and feature complexity than about a clear reliability red flag.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks the drivetrain, electronics, and any signs of hard family use. Focus on cabin condition, because the Explorer’s value depends heavily on whether the interior and tech have been kept in good shape.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup spans from a value-oriented base model to Platinum, with ST-Line, Timberline, and King Ranch also available. The base trim leaves you with fewer luxury touches, while higher trims add more equipment and a more upscale feel.
• Powertrain: You can get a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder, an available hybrid based on a 3.3-liter V6, or a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6. The hybrid offers the best blend of power, efficiency, and capability, while the V6 is the choice if you want the most towing and acceleration.
• Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, and evasive steering assist.
• Infotainment: The Explorer uses Sync 3 with either an 8-inch or 10.1-inch touchscreen. Available tech includes FordPass Connect, a Wi-Fi hotspot, Ford+Alexa, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, navigation, wireless smartphone charging, a surround-view camera system, and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system.
• Fuel efficiency: The turbocharged 2.3-liter engine returns up to 24 mpg in combined driving, the hybrid returns as much as 27 mpg in combined driving, and the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 is rated at up to 21 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 Ford Explorer trim should I buy?

The 2022 Ford Explorer is offered in 8 trim levels: Base, XLT, ST-Line, Limited, Timberline, Platinum, ST, and King Ranch.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point if you want the Explorer’s core space and safety without paying for extras. It makes sense if you care more about getting into the lineup than about premium features.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and gives you a more balanced mix of equipment and price.
• ST-Line: This trim adds a sportier look to the XLT formula, so it suits you if style matters and you want a more aggressive appearance without moving to the performance-focused ST.
• Limited: This is the trim to consider if you want a stronger mix of comfort and available efficiency, especially because it can be paired with the hybrid powertrain.
• Timberline: Choose this if you want the most rugged setup in the lineup, including better off-pavement capability and more ground clearance.
• Platinum: This is the upscale choice if you want a more luxurious feel and more premium equipment.
• ST: Pick this if you want the most engaging driving experience and the sport-tuned character that stands apart from the rest of the lineup.
• King Ranch: This is the most distinctive luxury-oriented trim, with exclusive interior treatment and a more premium presentation.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, while Co-Pilot360 Assist+ adds more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Ford Explorer?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.

• Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 9,805 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.11% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $27,612, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Ford Explorer's resale value?

The current average of $27,612 sits slightly below last year's $31,418.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation curve. The Explorer’s broad appeal and family-friendly packaging should still support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.92/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Ford Explorer safe?

The 2022 Ford Explorer earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic high beams. If you choose Co-Pilot360 Assist+, you also get adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, lane-centering assist, and evasive steering assist.

One caveat is that complete NHTSA crash-test ratings for this model year were not published in the source material, so you should lean on the IIHS result and the standard safety equipment when evaluating it.

Should I buy a 2022 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.11% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.92/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It combines multiple powertrain choices with strong safety and broad trim coverage.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $23,573, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $27,612 average.
• It offers multiple powertrain options and strong handling.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping opportunity, the 2022 is the stronger primary choice because it combines lower pricing than last year with solid inventory and strong owner satisfaction. If your top priority is spending less upfront, the 2021 is the better price-sensitive alternative, especially if you find one in good condition with the equipment you want.
