The 2022 BMW Z4 delivers the enjoyment of top-down motoring with the premium appointments and technology of a modern BMW.

Though the previous generation of the Z4 utilized a power-retractable hardtop, the current-gen car (introduced for the 2019 model year) switched to a canvas soft top. The result is a modern roadster with a classic appeal. The compact top stows without eating into the 9.9 cubic feet of trunk space.

The Z4 is offered in two flavors—the sDrive30i and the M40i. The former is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 255 horsepower and 294 pound-feet of torque. The M40i features a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six that makes 382 hp and 368 lb-ft of torque, allowing for 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds, according to BMW. Both engines route power to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddle-shifters.

EPA fuel-economy estimates for the sDrive30i are 25 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 28 mpg combined. The M40i returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined.

The Z4 comes standard with synthetic leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable sport seats, a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel, and a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buyers can also select a Harman Kardon premium stereo, as well as M Sport suspension and brakes to bring the sDrive30i’s handling dynamics up to the level of the M40i.

Base MSRP for the 2022 BMW Z4 Roadster is $49,990 for the sDrive30i. The more potent M40i starts at $63,700. Buyers can select a Driving Assistant Package, which adds a number of advanced safety features. An available Premium Package adds remote start, a head-up display, ambient lighting, adaptive LED headlights, and a self-parking assistant.
